WOW, that is MUCH cooler than one of the old pristine guitars that nobody ever played. Occassionally we will see an old guitar on Ebay that has been under some guys bed for 50 years and almost looks perfect.....sells for a million bucks....no thanks. Give me a guitar like this that has had the hell played out of it. It will play better and sound better. And they look WAY cooler!
Hey Mike I'll give you a couple of hundred bucks for that old piece of junk!
The guitar was made in 1968. I got it in ’75. It is one of the earliest CBS instruments, made at a time when they still had a lot of parts left over from the days when Leo Fender ran the company. It’s possible the neck and or body are pre CBS, but there’s no way of knowing for sure. All the original hardware was replaced.
It has the very rare maple fretboard on a maple neck, with no stripe down the back. These were only made for 2 or 3 years. I’ve only seen 2 others.
Note the home made B string bender, that was made by my father (Dad passes away 2 years ago at the age of 90) and the palm pedal on the G string.
The humbucker has a coil splitter, and the guitar has an out of phase switch. Red Rhodes wired it up.
This was my only guitar for about 15 years. It is still my favorite. I actually bought a different tele the day before I got this one, but when I saw this one I know it was the one for me, so I quickly sold the other one and grabbed it.
The guitar was stolen in 1980, but recovered a few months later. Somebody walked into a club where a friend of mine was playing, and asked him if he wanted to buy it, cheap. My friend immediately recognized it as mine, and bought it, and I in turn bought it back from him. That’s when I had my name inlayed in it.
How come Tele's always look better with a little wear on 'em?
Interesting story about that neck, Mike. I had a Tele, 70-something model, with the maple fingerboard, and no skunk stripe. Same decal, too, as well as I remember.
And, uh, CBS bought Fender in 1964.
