Who cut this album?

Post by Les Green »

While browsing one of the local flea markets I came across a steel guitar album, which I immediately bought for $1. The name is "STEEL GUITAR FAVORITES", Somerset label, album # SF-31300. No liner notes whatsoever. It has a picture of a WHITE 6 string lap steel, which looks very similar to a Fender Custom if memory serves me. The songs are:
Almost To Tulsa
Red's ride
Palomino Rag
Dana's Tune
O.J.'s Bounce
Making Friends With The Blues
Pixie Steel Guitar
Rene'
Woodsheddin'
Tormented
About half are E9th and half what sounds like C6th. Anyone have any ideas who cut this? Very good playing although the mix is not very good. I'm thinking it might be Red Rhodes.

Thanks Michael,
Info is much appreciated. Two of the song titles sort of gave me a clue. Thanks again.

I have the same album.

I always wondered who played it... and why the album sleeve didn't give anyone credit for playing.

This album was released on a half dozen different labels. I have it on Alshire label S-5359 dated 1979. The cover art shows Red in a steel mill with hard hat seated behind a D10 Dekley ? and has a complete list of credits.
Pretty daggone good pickin' no matter which label is on it. Image

While we're at it, does anyone know who the lead player is? He put down a few awesome tracks also.

No problem Jerry, I just thought while we were at it we may as well find out who everyone is! I wonder why it was released on so many different labels?

les, here is a link to more discussion on the LP. A search will probably lead you to more info.
I don't have a clue who the other musicians are either, but am curious if anyone knows.

Maybe experts Joe Alterio or Jason Odd can shed some light on it. http://steelguitarforum.com/Archives/Archive-000003/HTML/20011227-1-013173.html <font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Jerry Overstreet on 25 December 2005 at 08:45 AM.]</p></FONT>

Recorded around 1964, there's never been any session deails listed and Red's never really seem to have been a fan of them.
These records were usually cut in bulk.

For example a couple of his bandmembers confirmed that three albums cut by Red Rhodes & the Detours (each LP credited to a bandmember who sang on the 10 songs that made each album; Johnny Meeks, Dennis Hromek and Earl Ball) were cut in about three hours.

Essentially they were budget efforts on budget labels which were then sold/leased to other budget labels, it really depended how well Red was known at the time in accodance to whether he got billing or not.

At the moment all of his albums except the stuff he did with Tom Bradshaw is in limbo.

The thing about those latter albums with identical material choice, I'm not even sure if they're total re-recordings or simply Red re-working them as he did with his 1973 album when it was reissued in 1976.
