Amazing guitarist plays Phili. Pa.
An old friend of mine invited me to a concert at the TLA Theater in Phili. this week.Swedish guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen was the featured act. It was the most incredible six string playing , Ive ever seen in my life!!! It was loud but, i really got my $$s worth. What a show.Anybody else ever see this cat? bob

Yngwie is without a doubt the fastest guitar player on the planet. He plays even faster live than on his albums. One thing that I don't like about his music is that if you have heard one song you've pretty much heard them all.
If you're really into shred guitar playing let me suggest Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. You'll wanna throw your guitar in the dumpster after that.

Glenn , Im not really into the shred thing, but ,but i do like to listen to it sometimes. I had heard of this guy before but, never expected to see a show like that.Im still kinda shocked by the show this guy put on.He played 2 hrs non- stop. Equally smoked on acoustic too.He has to be from another galaxie! bob

I saw this on another web site. EVH from 1987.
I still say he's pretty hard to beat when he was at the top of his game. It makes me sad when I read about some of the things going on with him now.

Yup, Malmsteens' pretty fast, and funny to watch. He's on a G3 video with Satch and Vai.
If you want to hear SCARY fast playing, find some stuff by Shawn Lane. At 14, this guy toured with Black Oak Arkansas, later turned to shred, and then to eastern influenced stuff before tragically passing away at a very early age.
But what a player....

You like notes per second with great content? Allan Holdsworth, without whom EVH would have been Riley Puckett and the Union Gap

Good to see that Yngwie is back in the groove. He hit it big in the early eighties as a child prodigy and had a strat model named after him. Then he hit some hard times, and I predicted that his career was over, just as I predicted in the late 70's that ZZTop's comeback would fail, and predicted in 1988 that the Berlin wall would last a thousand years.
Yngwie is from Stockholm, and as a kid he practiced by playing Bach. It used to be that he had the fretboards on some of his guitars scalloped: he'd take a round file and scoop out the area between the frets to make them concave. Then he play by pressing the string just enough to get it to hit the fret.

All I can say is, go see him if he comes to your area. His show was so outrageous, I cant really compare him to any guitarist ive ever seen. Thank God, theres still guys around like him to shake everyone up a little bit! He is also a great example of a non- singer being able to front, a full blown show. You would need a little more than cute looks ,and a funky hat, to steal the show from this cat. bob

I've been catching Yngwie from time to time ever since he started with "Steeler" years ago.
I don't think it's just the speed that impresses, but the surety and conviction of his playing, and possibly the classical content- Harmonic minor, Diminished and lots of pedal point licks all give a bombastic heavy flavor. He's a real showman.
