The Cherryholmes Family

Post by Walter Stettner »

Wow! Never heard of them so far, but they won the 2005 IBMA "Entertainer Of The Year" Award. A family band, playing hard driving traditional Bluegrass - as good as it gets!

The kids are 13, 15, 17 and 21 - great to see that the tradition continues! Image

Check out their appearance at the Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour under
http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp

BTW, this program is something that all of you should check out, no matter if you are into Bluegrass, Folk, Blues, Aoustic Rock...All of the shows are downloadable, but you should have high speed internet as the files are large!

Kind Regards, Walter

The Cherryholmes started right here in the Bluegrass captitol of the world, Los Angeles County,Ca. If you can get the Alt.Country-Roots Music-Whatever magazine No Depression where you are, the current (Nov.-Dec.) issue has a good article on them.

Saw them on TV a couple of weeks ago. They mentioned that all the kids were home-schooled and they had added music to their studies and hence the family band came about. Absolutely GREAT, very inspiring.

This family is the real think! Instrumental skill, outstanding vocals, excellent harmony blend, really exciting stage show.

On the GOP, they sang a song called, I'm Working On A Brand New Heartache" and boy am I glad I was recording it. I've listened to it 25 times. A fantastic group whether you like grass or not. Put a steel in it and it's a country hit.

I have all their CD's and the Windsongs stuff is great. It amazes me how much their playing and singing has improved over the past year. The harmony is awesome. Listening to them a few years ago and it just sounded like another family band. They do a lot of twin fiddle work and could easily be a top country group is they chose to be.

Get Rhonda Vincent's DVD, some of the Cherryholmes are on it. At one point they have 5 fiddles and a viola/cello going. Some of her stuff is 100% country and the stage personality is electric. Not to mention that the band has dynamics. Ths singing is out front and nobody plays over top of anyone else.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm not plugged in to the loop so I wouldn't have come across these folks. There are some other family bands I have heard who were on the radar mainly because of promotion and family values image-making (in other words Family Values with a capital F & V because by golly we can sell a lot of product with a colgate smile and a bible) but who couldn't make good music once you got past the veneer---and frankly I don't care to listen to lil' sister on the fiddle until she can actually play the thing, otherwise please stay on the PTA talent show circuit until you are ready for professional performance. But these guys sound great (and real). There is a bit of Rhonda Vincent running through their sound too.

I may be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure the youngest girl has written some tunes for Rhonda Vincent. Dad is a retired Navy SEAL, BTW.

On Walter's link in the original post there are a whole bunch of worthwhile shows. I just got high-speed internet so I'm going nuts downloading stuff. There is a show with Hem with Bob Hoffnar. Real good stuff.

This is a very cool radio show. With video. With 9768 trllion available stations, this ought to be on cable.
