Beer Goggles

Post by Rick Garrett »

Just my honest opinion here but Billy's got his beer goggles on has got to be right up there with Achey Breakey Heart as one of country musics worst songs ever.

Somehow I can't help but think that neither of these songs will ever be referred to as "Classic Country Music". I think songs like that is what gives country music a bad name to some folks. Sorry if any of you guys played on the beer goggle song but man I turn my radio off and grab some REAL country music CD every time I hear that song coming. Just my luck that they play that song all the time around here because Neil Mc Coy lives in Longview.

How about "The Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog" by George Jones? That is truly a country classic! Image

The lead guitar licks are very similar to Mel McDaniel's "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On".

I have not heard this song, but I got an E-MAIL from Brent Mason's wife, Julie, and she told me that Brent used the 1950 Fender Broadcaster that I gave him two years ago when he cut this tune. I've been wanting to hear it because I made my living (for 30 years)with the very guitar that is featured in this song.
I know Brent has used it on quite a few sessions, and he calls every once in a while to tell me whose records he's used it on, but I DO NOT listen to MAINSTREAM country music. I listen to 92.1 KTFW because they play Bob Wills, Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Farron Young, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and so on. Please keep in mind, a statement that Harrold Bradley once told me: "There is a difference between a HIT song, and a GOOD song." I didn't like "Just a Swingin'", or "Achy Breaky Heart", or even "You Picked a Fine Time To leave Me Lucile", but I wish I would have written them!

Just a hint, Brent Mason might be playing the old Broadcaster at this years CMA awards. He's nominated (for the 14th time) for Musician of the year. GOOD LUCK BRENT!!

Well after putting up with a bunch of non COUNTRY on the country radio stations, and watching CMT, I still have not heard the song. Everyone else says they hear it all the time, but I'm gettin' sick of this NEW country just to hear a few bars of my friend pickin' on my other old friend. I know.... I'm too cheap to buy the album.

Yes, atleast steel is on the record. I'm glad Neal is being heard on the radio again and the video is funny! Image

As for the winner of the CMA Musician Award goes. I'd love Paul to win this year! Runner up would have to be Brent, the other Player! Image
