Clyde Mattocks, All 'round great picker!!

I attended the Kenny Dail birthday bash yesterday near La Grange, NC at which they had a nice jam session going. Clyde Mattocks was handling the lead guitar chair. I've known Clyde for a while now and have really only got to hear him play steel and we all know how good he is on that Emmons! He had it all going with a Telecaster and a small Fender Princeton tube amp. Great tone and licks to match. If you've never heard Clyde on lead guitar, do it if you get a chance! He's got a very cool style and plays for the song which is rare. A lot of pickers (including myself) tend to overplay at times but Clyde gives a tune just what it needs and when the steel, fiddle, or whatever is doing their part he always plays something to compliment what their doing! My hat's off to you dude!!!.....JH in Va.

25+ years ago when I was stationed at Cherry Point, a local steel player named Bob Stone played a nice "Cherokee" brand steel that was built by Clyde I think. I never got to meet Clyde but he had a great reputation with a coastal touring country rock band. Do any east Caroliners know if Bob is still with us?

In 1969 when I was stationed at Seymour-Johnson AFB in Goldsboro NC, I use to go to the NCO club on Friday night and hear Charlie Albertson and his band. He had a great Steel player and I didnt know until years latter it was Clyde Mattocks. I was at the Opry one night with Weldon, and Jimmy Capps introduced us to Charlie and I ask him who his Steel player was back then.
Would love to hear Clyde play again someday.

deserve. To answer Bill Cunningham's
question, Bob Stone is still active and
playing with a fine regional band called
Tuff Enuff. He still lives in Havelock,
North Carolina. I heard him play about a month ago and he hasn't missed a step.
Does some nice C6th sounding things on E9th.

Welcome, Clyde! Great to have you on board.

As has been said, Clyde is a great player on PSG, 6-string, and a few other instruments. He's a legend in these parts, along with his Super Grit Cowboy Band, which has been going for more than 30 years. A lot of class A musicians have come up through that band!

But, most importantly, Clyde is an alumnus of Florence, SC's "Slim Mims and the Dream Ranch Boys".

Some of my favorite licks on old Porter Waggoner records are those done on electric banjo by Buck Trent. Clyde can nail those things on PSG with the same feel and tone as well as doing anything else he wants to play on either neck. The only thing I ever found wrong with his pickin' was that he used the Day setup (just like Kenny Dail). Oh well, you can't have it all I guess..

I got to meet and hear Clyde in Kannapolis in June.Excellent player and a nice fellow.We chatted a bit about the WNCT-TV days of yester-year.

Clyde takes a back seat to no one...if you don't believe it, listen to his new CD "over my shoulder"...A player could spend an entire life time just doing what he does on that cd...Then on top of that, he is a super human being, and no one promotes the steel guitar like he does...totally giving...He enjoys working with newer players; Clyde is class..if you know him, you know what I am talking about; if you don't know him you should; especially after hearing his cd!!
