I know that some of you,in the past, have inquired about an inexpensive turntable to play your records. (I won't say "old" 'cause there ain't no "new" ones.)

Well,K-Mart has,available, a "<a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp ... able%20top" onmouseover="window.status='table-top'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">table-top</a> entertainment system" that features an AM-FM radio,cassette deck,CD player,& a 3 SPEED TURNTABLE! (33-45-78) All for $89.99. I'm sure that any of you that have a basic knowledge of electronics can "jimmy-rig" a system,(w/ the aid of a dpdt switch,& an RCA jack) a way to go from the t.t. to you "main" <a style='text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 3px double;' href="http://www.serverlogic3.com/lm/rtl3.asp ... o%20system" onmouseover="window.status='stereo system'; return true;" onmouseout="window.status=''; return true;">stereo system</a>,or back to the "compact" system.
Just thought I'd pass this tid-bit of info on to those who're interested.

(I'd post anything, just to see my name "in lights"! Image )

Smiley ----- Good post, but there are new turntables still being made today . Companys like Sony , Denon , and of course Techincs still have turntables . I know because for Fathers Day I bought my Dad a Sony FX 250 H two speed fully automatic turntable so he can record his albums to a CD format.
BuT ---I'll admit this --Todays turntables are nothing like the "Iron Horses" they made in the 60's & 70's.
I still run a 1967 Garrard Lab 80 and a 1974 Dual 1229Q and wouldn't trade them for a new one today.
And regarding your post you are correct in saying that there are companys that make the systems you spoke about.

I buy great turntables at yard sales usually around $10.00 which is cheaper than a new needle. I have 10 now just in case.

It sounds good but...

Those types usually do not play 78's very well (and that would be the only reason to buy it). You really need a different size needle for 78's than for 33 1/3 and 45. If it doesn't have a preamp out then whatever amp you connect it to, if you wire a turntable output, must have an RIAA equalized preamp - a "phono" input. It won't work directly to a PC for the same reason, it needs the RIAA equalization to restore the full fidelity and it needs amplfied to basically "line level" for the PC.

Otherwise, just for 33 1/3 and 45's you can buy a decent, inexpensive turntable, that will work better than those "system" types for the same price.

More to it than a simple wiring change.

Also, I notice they don't have the 16rpm option.

That's how I learned to play. I'd turn 33s down to 16 to figure out the notes!

no wonder I play so slooowly... Image

I've been using a Sony PSLX250H Turntable
that's made for transferring records to computer. Works very well, has a built in phono preamp, so you don't need any other stereo gear. Doesn't have 78 speed, but it's only $87 bucks or so on the net.

So, if you play a country record backwards on it, will you get your job, wife, and pickup truck back? (I realize it is an old joke) Image

Well since we're talking about tuntables ,I forgot to add this in my last post .
A very good friend of mine runs a business in Columbia,South Carolina called "The Turntable Factory"
Mr. Joel Thorner has repaired turntables since 1968 and let me add he knows every turntable ever made and can rebuild them or fully restore them to perfection. He rebuilt my Garrard Lab 80 and my Dual 1229Q two years ago and both play without a flaw.
If any of you have a turntable from yesteryear I encourage you to visit www.theturntablefactory.com and explore his vast websight of pictures and information.
Needless to say Joel recieves turntables from all over the United States on a daily basis and has a very loyal customer following .
So get that turntable out of the closet ----Joel will have it running in no time.
Thanks James Stewart,Jr.

True James,if you wanna spend $250-$300. I'm a firm believer in the ol' saying,"Muddy water's better'n no water at all!"

The Sony and Denon go for around $100.00 including the cartridge.I know because I just bought a Sony FX 250H but the Technics is higher priced because it is a DJ turntable.

There are turntables on eBay, and I think I saw one in a Circuit City, that have a built in preamp for going direct into your computer. They are around $100.

Hey, there's new records, I should know I enter them into stock.
Mars Volta has a triple LP.. White Stripes, Peaches, Badly Drawn Boy, Probot, the Melvins, Queens Of the Stoneage, the Basement Jaxx, Spiritualized, Tricky, the Datsuns, etc.. oh, you mean country records.

I don't see them.
