Robbie Fulks With Fats Kaplan
Just caught Robbie last night at the World Cafe in Philly on a double bill with a band called "The Gourds". Whoever thinks that one can't play country music in a traditional style with great big balls needs to get out and hear this man! He'll be at the Ioata club in Virginia tonight. From there, it's off to the Carolinas.
This is the first time that I've seen Robbie carrying a steel player with him on tour. His new album "Georgia Hard" kind of requires it I guess. Anyway, the steelers name is Fats Kaplan. He did a great job on steel as well as Fiddle, Mandolin, and,,,,,,,yes.......a Jews harp (SP) Ya' had to be there.
I'm not familiar with The Gourds. I hung around for about 2 or 3 songs. They looked and sounded like a Grateful Dead meets Phish meets Rusted Root, 60's revival band. I happily gave up my seats to a couple of 20 something's groovin' and drinkin' by the door.
GO CHECK OUT ROBBIE FULKS DERN IT!! You won't regret it.

Fats used to live here in NYC. Played with Tom Russell. I took a lesson from him shortly after I got my first steel, mid '80s. Wrong time for me--I wasn't ready to learn.
Yes, I wasn't expecting what I saw when he came to the door, with that name. And BTW, he also plays a squeeze box or a button accordian or one of those things.
[This message was edited by Jon Light on 05 June 2005 at 05:20 AM.]
