Julie Andrews, My Favorite Things, update

Post by chas smith R.I.P. »

To commemorate her 69th birthday on October 1st, actress/vocalist Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.

One of the musical numbers she performed was "My Favorite Things" from the legendary movie "The Sound Of Music." However, the lyrics of the song were deliberately changed for the entertainment of her "blue hair" audience. Here are the lyrics she recited:

Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
And we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
When we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache,
when the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
Then I remember the great life I've had,
And then I don't feel so bad.

Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and repeated encores.

Great changes!

On another note, I had heard that because of a less than succesful vocal chord
node operation a few years back,
that she had retired completely from singing in public.

I am very glad that she came out to sing,
even in this blythly humorous fashion.

Whether you liked it stylistically or not, (she could be corny),
she still had one of the great voices of our life times,
and was always a great lady.

I remember a photo of Julie Andrews, that appeared in the magazine section of the local newspaper (Buffalo, NY) when I was about 13 (circa 1966) that was, to say the least, breathtaking.
[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 13 May 2005 at 11:23 AM.]

I don't listen to it these days, but show music was a big part of my youth thanks to my mom's musical tastes. In her prime, what a beautiful sound Julie Andrews could produce ... spot on intonation and bell-like delivery. And unlike many, she was still on top of her game in her mid-late 50's.

Just go back and watch Victor/Victoria to see how well she stayed on top of her game.

Beauty intact
voice intact
dramatic acting skills improved
comedy acting skils improved
Willingness to take chances with her work and image.

And then see SOB ( Standard Operational B**ls**t)
To see how she never took it all too seriously.

Her long marriage to a great comedy producer/director I bet has had a lot to do with her staying cool and having fun with life.
