Hotels in Nashville, TN

Post by Frode Bjoernstad »

Hi !
any thoughts on which of these hotels is the best deal in downtown Nashville? It's for me and my girlfriend, and we will spend most of our time in Nashville walking I guess..

When I used to commute into Nashville as a songwriter, I usually stayed at Shoney's. Rates were good, they had a pool, and it was in walking distance to everywhere I needed to go. I stayed at the Quality Inn and the ventilation was bad. Not so at Shoney's. That would be my choice. I'd probably stay there again next time I go to Nashville.

I used to live part time in the Fiddler's Inn out by where Opryland used to be. (I think Music Valley Drive.) Cracker Barrel and Shoney's restaurants are within walking distance, (one is in the same parking lot and the other is across the street.) I think they built an outlet mall there, too, now. It's close to where the Nashville Palace was, too. The Ernest Tubb and Nashville Nightlife Theaters are both out that way, too.

Frommers' are usually great guides but 1994 was a while ago... The Shoney's closed and was recently reopened as a Comfort Inn or Days Inn, I can't now recall which. They also missed their own misspelling of Vanderbilt which is quite non-Frommers!

All three are quite near music row if that's your interest. Though I've not been in the new (formerly Shoneys) Comfort Inn/Day's Inn and haven't been in the others for several years, I suspect that the new Comfort/Days Inn is probably the nicest only because it looked as if they were upgrading it a bit before re-opening. Both of the others had seen much better days the last time I was there.

On the other hand, all have four walls per room, locking doors and indoor plumbing, which might be all you really need if you're spending your days out sightseeing and your nights out listening to music...
[This message was edited by Chris Bauer on 22 March 2005 at 04:36 AM.]

If you stay at The Fiddlers be prepared to have your stuff stolen by the illegal alien help and then be approached as you leave your door by pan handlers scamming gas money.

Frode,
You made a nice choice to stay downtown. Easy walking distance to most things. I have stayed at Fiddlers, several times, it is ok, even better if you want to be able to get out of town in the evenings. I always straighten the room myself, don't let the help in, if at all possible. And Nashville is no different than any other city. Keep some loose change and ones in your pocket, it will satisfy the panhandlers, without showing them your wallet.

Check out the Trolley cars that go all around the downtown area. They are really cheap to ride and make frequent stops. Check out 2nd avenue, an old part of the city that has been re-vitalized with shops, clubs, and restaurants. Within a couple of blocks of Printers Alley. Also, at the beginning of 2nd street, they have a riverboat you can ride. It might go to Opry Mills and the Grand Old Opry, but I am not sure. The location that you have selected is ideal because you can walk to most everything except the Opry area. The country music hall of fame is in walking distance, so don't miss that. Public transportation is not like in Europe, so you might consider renting a car for a couple of days to get you to the outlying areas where you might find a club that has some good steel playing.
[This message was edited by George Kimery on 22 March 2005 at 06:53 AM.]

I'm sure it's derided by the locals, but a stay at Opryland Hotel is a vacation in itself.
I've travelled an awful lot, but I've never stayed at or even seen a hotel like the Opryland...it's one in a million!
I wouldn't miss it!

Frode,
Crime can be bad in any big city. Always, be aware of your surroundings.
I hope you have fun in Nashville! Image
It's really a great place to live and visit regardless of what you may read on here.

Frode,
You will have a ball in Nashville. Its a great city. If New York wasn't the greatest city in the world for music and everything else I would think about moving there !

Try not to watch any of the local Nashville steel players down on lower Broadway. They are frightening Image

My wife and I stay at the Shoney's/Comfort Inn every year for NAMM. It did not seem to change any when the name changed. The resturant next door is now closed, but lots of new stuff across the street - live music and lots of food. Kinda a long walk to lower Broadway, but only a $5 cab ride including tip...have fun!

Ditto to a visit to the Opryland Hotel. It doesn't cost anything to walk around in this one of a kind hotel. It's a shopping mall, it
's an amusement park, it's a river, it's a jungle, it will blow you away. Don't miss it!
With Opry Mills mall, the Grand Ole Opry, Earnest Tubb's record shop, The Texas Troubador theater, and the General Jackson river boat all within walking distance, you can spend a day in the area.

...a hotel like the Opryland...it's one in a million!
...and that's close to what you'll pay,a night,to stay there, too. (actually, the CHEAPEST room there is,like $250 a night.) And,prepare to pay $6.00+ a day,to park on the hotel lot! Its kinda like they say about N.Y.C.,"Its a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't wanna live there!"

(To Bob Hoffnar: Nothing personal Bob. I just like to repeat what I hear other people say. Image )

We stayed at the Courtyard downtown (170 4th Ave North) It was a little pricey, around $100 a night, but it is just up the street from all the lower Broadway clubs and lots of steel guitar players! That's also lots cheaper than getting arrested for DUI in TN if you like to have a few beers. There were a few bums/homeless people we walked by every night coming back from the bars, but they were just trying to stay warm in a very cool December in Nashville! Never once did we feel unsafe. Have fun.

Also, Printer's Alley was right out the back door of the Hotel. But you had better like a rowdy crowd to go down there. What a Zoo!!!! Image
[This message was edited by Roger Light on 23 March 2005 at 09:29 AM.]
