Gatemouth Brown in bad health

Post by Don E. Curtis »

Word came to us from Tony Kotula from Detroit that Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown is experiencing health problems and complications. I hate to hear this as I've always been a big fan.

i was born in Louisiana but i was raised on the Texas side
Gate is one of a kind -
i love the kooky way he plays that guitar Image
he's the real Mc Coy & quite a funny character to boot
he don't like it when a picker tries to cop his stuff so he puts his hand & fingers in such a way that it's disheartening to follow
Lord Gate's pickin is fun Image
Gate has played often in France over the years & has always been popular among the neophytes
i've caught his act quite a few times & Gate's a hoot !
i got a couple of interviews w: him as well when he played for a week at the Meridien Hotel in Paris
he's played there often & it's one of the best & most intimate places i know fer catchin' some good sounds

the Louis Jordan tunes that Gate recorded w: Milt Buckner on organ is some great stuff

is there really a Salt Pork West Virginia ?

BB & Gate are the last of that school around

i'm prayin' for ya' Gate

A few weeks ago I spoke to one of Gate's friend. If I remember right I think he said Gate had lung cancer.

I worked with a lead guitar picker, Billy Charles, in Kansas City, MO back in the 80's. Billy had toured with Gatemouth and when Billy wasn't into his "chemical dependency" he had some good road stories.

Sorry to hear this news about Gatemouth Brown. A band I was with in the early 80s opened up for him at a club in Chicago. He shared the same dressing room with us and we had one hell of a poker game before, during and long after the gig! Mighty Joe Young droped buy and stayed until Gatemouth had won all his money too! He was quite a character (and a good card player)and had many cool road stories. He also put on a great performance that night, and I recall he let our fiddle player sit in with his band. It was a memorable evening!
