Post by Joseph Barcus »

While getting my ebay listings together tonight for my 45s I sell I came across this artist called "Dugg Collins" when I placed it ont he turntable and it started playing I said to myself this sure sounds like "johnny bush" well I pulled up my Johnny bush folder told my wife to come and listen while I played two songs and ask her to tell me if there were two people, she and I both agreed that man this "Dugg Collins" is a johnny bush twin or was it Johnny Bush himself let me know thanks Joe

Maybe Johnny Bush has "other names" but I have a C.D. by Dugg Collins and it is not Johnny Bush, however it is a good Johnny Bush type C.D a very good C.D I might add,The C.D is titled "sounds like TEXAS" and is on STARTEX records label.

I once heard it said by someone deeper into the San Antonio music scene than I that Johnny Bush uses his first and middle names as his stage name.....and that his full name was Johnny Bush Shinn...or something like that....I could be wrong.

Shinn is Johnny's family name, but I believe he had his own surname changed to Bush for professional reasons.

Dugg Collins is a DJ up in Kansas, and is a great country singer as well as being in the Country Disc Jockey Hall of Fame. He worked in TX for many years, and Jim Loessberg produced an excellent album for him a few years ago, the one mentioned in this thread. And no, he's not Johnny Bush. Image

Wow, "Talk About Me," the old Paycheck song from the 60's... haven't heard that one since I was on Cornell Hurd's band. Cool. Image

Yes, Dugg was/is very JB influenced. Bush was a great style-setter in those days to a lot of guys. Another local performer, Johnny Lyon, has been singing like Bush for years also. Jake Hooker has taken it to another level and made it his own as well. Justin Trevino started singing like that back when he was a teeny-bopper, though he's got his own thing going now, vocally.

Thanks for mentioning this song. I typed Dugg Collins into the search bar on my Rhapsody player, and surprisingly it had this song. It was on a "Little Darlin'" album entitled "Should have been hits". Definitely a Johnny Bush influence for sure and some good steel to boot! There was also a great sounding song on it too by Hoot Hester. I knew Hoot played a mean, fiddle but wow, he's a great singer too!

Dugg has a newer album,(2001) on the "Startex" label called,"Sounds Like Texas". Fourteen songs that you will LOVE!! The pickers on it,reads like a Texas "who's who". Prod. by Jim Loessberg.

(apology to Robert Hays. Forgot about your posting the same info. Image But as good as Dugg sings,another bump won't hurt.)

Got this from Dugg:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Some very funny stuff on the posting. I listened to that clip and that was from a Certron session I cut in 1970 with Johnny Paycheck as my producer. I cut the tune twice. Once for Little Darlin' and again for Certron when Mayhew took over that deal. Always hated those sides I did with Paycheck. He had me singing about two steps too high and I'm not sure I even knew how to sing in 1970. That's Lloyd Green on steel by the way. Curley Chalker was playing rhythm guitar, if you can believe that. Johnny Gimble on fiddle and Jr. Huskey on bass. Billy Grammer was one of the guitar players. It was interesting, but certainly not some of my best work to say the least.
Dugger"
/////////////////////////////////////////////
(ADDENDUM)
When I asked Dugg if any of this stuff was still available,he stated:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Smiley....there never was an lp version of the Little Darlin' and Certron material. Nick Hunter at Audium is leasing a lot of that old stuff from Mayhew. Maybe you could influence him to do a Dugg Collins collection of material. it's all rotting away in the basement at an old theater Mayhew owns. He's getting up there in age and one day, someone will find his dead @&# in there and then who knows what will happen to all that stuff. It's just wasting away. All those Paycheck sides, Bobby Helms, Stonewall Jackson, Hoot Hester, Joe Poovey me and so many others. All I ever had with Mayhew was single releases and no...I don't have any of that stuff. dc "

The Audium/Koch deal is ongoing, there's been several reissues on the Little Darlin' sides, although the first was a Paycheck comp a few years back, there's been a few in the last year.

They're basically standard budget compilations, with historical sleeve notes, which are kind of ordinary from what I've seen.
(sleeves are very generic, it's a shame)

No listing on the original 45, or album they might have come from, and that of course gives no indication if the tracks are in chronological order or what the case is.

Personally I'd like to have seen reissues of the albums by the bigger artists, with bonus tracks, or a twofer deal.
They don't really do two-for-one CDs at Koch, but with access to I assume, pretty much everything, it would be nice if they could do this.

The Paucheck albums in particular were killer, in some cases far superior to major label issues (Nashville at least) from the same period.
I was also hoping for a nice sampler set, some of the artists didn't cut enough for an album or a compilation CD.

Those who didn't have an album, but had quite a few sides, then a comp on them would be great.

With labels like Ace and Sundazed getting into the country reissue biz, labels like Koch/Audium really have to lift their game.
And yeah, a Dugger track on a various artists sampler would be a good start, there's the Homesteaders, Lloyd Green, the Black Brothers (Bobby and Larry with Hoyet Henry) and plenty more for a sampler.

'Should Have Been Hits'.. nice compiltation title, I only know a couple of the artists, and yet it's possibly the most interesting one I've heard of in the Little Darlin series.

Still got my fingers crossed that the Paycheck and Green sets (the label's most prolific artists) will be far better.

The first one in the deal was a few years ago, it was a really good Paycheck sampler from the 1960s sides.
I'm hoping for a more detailed set of reissues, chronological maybe.
