Gretchen Wilson's New Song

Post by Larry Jamieson »

Heard a new song by Gretchen on the radio today. I'm not sure of the title, but it may be "When I Think About Cheatin". The song featured LOTS of steel, and is nicely done. I do not have the album. Anybody know who the steel player is?

Like that tune!
I'm fairly certain Russ Pahl does steel, lap steel and banjo on the CD.

It is Russ Pahl on the album. Check out the video for that song on CMT & GAC. It was filmed at the Ryman and has lots of old Opry stars computer generated into the video such as Hal Rugg, Buddy Charleton and others on steel....Chet Atkins, Brother Oswald and a bunch more.

You should check out the CD too. There's a good shuffle called 'When it Rains I Pour', another great tune called 'Home Wrecker', and several other cuts that are NOT like 'Here for the Party' - some more traditional stuff.

It's good to keep in mind that some of these new singers, while often dismissed as rockers, can still do justice to traditional country as well.
She usually keeps company with Hank Jr., Kid Rock, and the outlaw gang....

I saw Gretchen and Gaylon in concert this past Sunday from 7 or 8 rows back (thanks Mom, love ya!). It was the final stop of the Brooks & Dunn tour. Gaylon, I don't know if you were aware of this, but you were featured extensively, and got a lot of time on the two big video screens at the sides of the stage--more than any other player that night, of any band! You nailed the parts and sounded great on that black Emmons. The other steel players were back in the mix, but you were riding out in front prominently.

And for the record, Gretchen needs no autotuner. She genuinely has the pipes and the pitch. And she knows how to "keep it country".

As said earlier, Russ Pahl plays the steel on her CD.
[This message was edited by Chris Lasher on 28 October 2004 at 02:56 PM.]

Chris,

Thanks for the compliments. You should've let me known ahead of time that you were gonna be there. Any steelers who are coming to one of our shows should drop me an email before the show so we can try to hook up. I would've given you the nickel tour of the busses and backstage area. Yes, I know that I'm way up in the mix. I was real worried when we hired a front of house engineer from the Alabama tour. You see, Alabama never had a steel in the band and I thought, "Great, he's probably never mixed a steel before so I'll never be heard out front." No true....He actually worked with Vince Gill & John Hughey for several years and loves the steel as you heard Sunday night. In addidtion to that, you also noticed that Gretchen's songs are just full of steel guitar. After listening to several board tapes of our performance, the band now calls it the Gaylon & Gretchen show. I actually think that sometimes the steel is too far up front in the mix. {Is that possible?} On the Brooks & Dunn show we only had 35 minutes. We start the Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich tour on Nov 5th. We'll have the stage for an hour and I'll also be playing Dobro on a tune or two. She's also doing a Loretta Lynn song in the set. How country is that!

Gaylon -

Bring that tour up here to Minneapolis. I'd be front row to see Gretchen (and you). I missed her at the State Fair Image

You gonna sit in with B&R too? Image

Don

PS - Wish I could be there on the 5th - that's my birthday! Image

Don,

B&R have their own steel player so I'll not be sittin' in with them. We have been in Minneapolis 2 or 3 times this year already and according to our schedule the are no more shows there this year. But, I'll bet we'll be there next year on the Kenny Chesney Tour. Maybe we can hook up then.

Re: When I think about Cheatin'
Yes, the steel is SUPER; and, the voice is beautiful - until you listen to the words, then it loses all credibility in my opinion. It's hard to consider it a beautiful love song when the reason she doesn't cheat is because the stranger doesn't two-step very well (didn't even give him a whole song!!)

quote:
I've never done anything
That would bring a teat to your eye
I've never crossed the line
or needed an alibi to cover up a lie
But darling i'll admit
They're been times when i could have
The thing that kept me strong
Is the one thing that is always on My mind
[CHORUS]
When I think about cheatin'
I just think about you leavin'
And how my world would fall to pieces
If I tossed your love away
Even when i'm tempted by some stranger
Oh there's never any danger
I just think about you leavin'
When I think about cheatin'

There was a time in Abilene
When he said all the things I wanted to hear
It was hard to turn him down
Between the champaigne and the sound of whispers in my ear
But it just took one two-step with someone and I was missing
you
He never had the chance cause I broke up the dance
Before the song was through

Since when was "credibility" an issue?

It's not like the character in the song is a pedal steel guitar manufacturer...

Great song. The cover band I'm in just picked it up.

Gretchen Wilson is the first female since I heard Paty Loveless that I think is a real good country singer. She's got character and comes from the Honky Tonk ranks. Gaylon, you've got a good gig. She's great.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 31 October 2004 at 11:47 PM.]

[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 01 November 2004 at 07:13 AM.]

Tony - don't get me wrong. Gretchen can rock with the best of 'em. But she can also bring a teat to your eye. Sounds kinda dangerous to me Image Image Image

Don

PS - Hey Donna, I guess you really aren't a "v.p." (private joke)!

Congratulations Gaylon on what sounds like a great gig. I must admit that I don't like much of what comes out of Nahsville these days, but Gretchen has gotten my attnetion. I really like her now that I know she lets you play that steel a lot!
I'm in Dallas and was ready to take you up on that grand tour thing, but my band has a gig that night....dangit!
You're gonna love the American Airlines Center. Very cool venue. Good luck.

I love Gretchen Wilson's new song "When I Think About Cheatin'". It's got a lot of great steel work in it. When I first heard it, Gretchen performed it on the Opry before it became a single. One thing I love about Gretchen's new song is how her voice really blends in with the steel. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel
