George Strait - "U Go Boy!"

I lost interest in modern country radio some time ago, evidenced by all these retro projects I put out. My wife has been wanting me to hear 3 or 4 songs which have been getting a lot of airplay recently. One of them was the Big & Rich fiasco discussed so much here on the forum. Well, we were coming back from the ISGC yesterday and it was a good time to get that dreaded task out of the way, so we tuned in a good old high energy mod country station with a couple of ex-rock DJs screaming at each other between songs (and on top of songs) and one of the first numbers up was the "Save A Horse" musical masterpiece. After suffering through that and a couple more closely akin to it, I was just about to exercise my right to freedom of speech when George strait hit the airwaves with the best song I've heard in a long time. It had every element that a great country song should have. It had a wonderful country melody which was well suited for the superb lyrics. The pure country instrumentation was laced with very fine steel which I assume was Paul Franklin. I was sold on the song halfway through, but had to question why it was written in the third person. Then came the twist at the end which drove the hammer home and everything I had wondered about now made perfect sense. I believe the song is titled "I Hate Everything." If that's not the title, it should be. I'll tell you, George, Alan, and a very small handful of others give me an occasional ray of hope that "heart" can still exist and find a place in a sad world of stupid songs. If there are others like me who have soured on country radio to the point of missing out on the occasional gem, I strongly encourage you to check out this song. I intend to get the CD it's on and see if it contains more like it.

Mike: You have managed to express my exact feelings when I 1st heard this song a couple weeks ago. I told "everyone" I discussed music with about it. Your post is a reminder that I need to purchase the CD that contains "I Hate Everything". and,....I agree with: "Come Back Whitey Shafer"! When George (or anyone) records a Whitey Shafer song the common thread from current country extends all the way back to the Lefty Frizzell and Whitey Shafer co-writing days!

I couldn't seem to find the CD it was on. Maybe it's just out on a single right now.

Great tune. You can rarely go wrong with George Strait, ever. I almost always enjoy the stuff that never makes the radio more than the singles. I believe that song is called "I Hate Everything." And I'll betcha dollars to donuts that it will be on his upcoming album, which is supposed to be a collection of his #1 hits (an impressive list), due in October, me thinks. I hate it when they do that, include new material on a "greatest hits" collection. Really ticks me off, having to buy 40 song I already have to get 1 or 2 I want.

This pay for mp3 download deal is starting to make more and more sence.

In the vein of "Why did they bother?", I can't see why Toby Keith released "Stays in Mexico" or whatever the name of the tune is. Heard it for the first time a couple of nights ago and, frankly, I wasn't impressed.

Most all of George Strait's stuff is great by me. Lot's of steel to practise to. Even those tunes that have none from the factory are great to try to fill in to.[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 07 September 2004 at 02:01 PM.]

I don't hardly buy anything commercial anymore. I wait to get albums by Hooker, Bush, and Flores. At least I know they are gonna sound country.
