Robbie Fulks interviews Jean Sheppard

Post by Tim Whitlock »

My erstwhile friend and compatriot in the Denver Barndance, Marty Jones, e-mailed me this link to an interview Robbie Fulks did with Jean Sheppard. In it they discuss her career, the golden age of country music and the current sad state of that genre. The article is full of Jean's great anecdotes and Robbie's insightful commentary. Good reading for anyone concerned with the ongoing devolution of country music (I especially like the part about the "legions of aerobically-conditioned singer zombies"). Fulks has written a wealth of fascinating essays on various topics ranging from his career to profiles of the legends of country music. Enjoy!

I'll read this when I get a chance but I just wanted to chime in---there was a 4 part documentary about country music that has aired on several networks--'The Lost Highway' I think it was called---and there was quite a bit of attention paid to Jean on the 'women in country' section. I learned a whole bunch about her role as a pioneer and I liked her A LOT. I felt like she would be a great person to have a few beers at the bar with (with humble apologies if she doesn't touch the stuff and would be offended by my thoughts). She seems like a no-nonsense lady who takes no crap from nobody and doesn't suffer fools gladly.
I always liked her music and now I like her too.

A great read. We need more stories like this of the "vets" of our industry.

Great article. Jean Sheppard is one of my favorites.
I'll be playing a Dance this Weekend with Jean's Piano Player, Robert Crigger, at the Outdoorsmen's Club on Hi-way 11-W just out of Bristol, TN. Come by and say hello if you are in the area.

Janice - If you go back to the link, you will see some headings at the top of the page. If you click "My Day" or "Articles" you can read other articles by Fulks, some of them are very recent. The Jean Sheppard piece was part two of a two part series called "What - No Nashville". Part one is equally interesting and funny.
