Tattoo Who?

Post by Bill Bassett »

I suspect some steel players have tattoos of one sort or another. From the classic military insignia (SEMPER FI) to the wild gothic designs of the alternative universe, tattoos are now officially a big part of western culture. So, the question is: Who among you have a music related tat? An instrument? A band name? A logo? A musical staff? Anybody?

I've been thinking of getting one myself...an abstract Telecaster. Looks as if it were drawn by Picasso. What do y'all think? Should I go for it?

I'm tattooed from the back of my neck to my ankles, but it's all traditional imagery. Four dragons and three Koi with traditional backrounds of wind, clouds and water.

I've got one on my arm but I'm not sure what it is. It wasn't the most well thought out thing I ever did...

I think they're like graffiti. I will never get a tatoo or a piercing. They deface and degrade the body, in my opinion.

Our bandleader has the band's logo tatooed on his arm. I was shocked to see that. Seriously!

There's alot of ink in the bars I play in around Portland. Both guys and dolls are seriously into it.
Alot of slicked back hair too...(These guys must go through alot of pillow cases!).
Alot of band members I play with have tattoos, but I've never been struck with the desire to get one.

I wore a Cornell Hurd temporary tattoo once, but it washed off when I took a shower.

I used to see a fella around ISGC and some Nashville functions with the Sho-Bud logo inked on his upper arm. Not sure who it was, but it seems it might have been Charlie Day, kin to Jimmy.

Perhaps, or they can decorate and artistically enhance the body, in the same way that make-up and attractive clothing do. They can also be biographical, or "protective".

On another level, there's a Japanese word, irezumi, that has a lot of meanings, one of which is, the life of the tattoo. That being that the tattoo has a life of its own, which will make no sense to anyone that doesn't have one.

From the guitar corner...Dave Biller has one of Django on his forearm. I have none. Which is a rare feat in Austin, so I am gathering. I've never seen so much skin art in my life as I have here in the past two years. Mostly on women too...but I digress.

If I was gonna wear a tattoo it would be of the socket outline for a 6L6 GTB (or maybe a 12AX7). Image

The first question Cliff Raven asked me was, "Why are you getting a tattoo, you certainly don't need one."

Mine's a circular "Just Kidding" in Old English style print on my upper arm.

Sure, It's not directly music related, but it is a direct reaction to a lot of the tattoos in the old hardcore scene. (I got it when the old rock band was on tour with Biohazard...those guys had some serious ink!)

Oh, and one of the guys in Skrew (early 90's industrial metal from Texas) had an AMAZING Hank Williams portait on his arm. It practically looked like a photograph!<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by P Gleespen on 10 August 2004 at 02:26 PM.]</p></FONT>

My tattoo has been a reminder of my youthful lack of judgement ever since all the boys of my class had tattoos applied while on our High-School sponsored end of school Junior trip.

Unlike today, and fortunately for them, the girls decided not to participate.

When we returned home, the reaction of our parents was predictable and swift. The tattoo artist closed shop and disappeared overnight to avoid prosecution, and the well known Recreation Park where it happened was extremely lucky that the event did not occur in the litigious climate of today.

My army records describes my tattoo as "Horseshoe and Roses with scroll and name Gene". Fortunately, I was between girl friends at the time and was egoistic enough to have my own name inscribed! Image

Bobby Lee, I'm with you.
And I'm particularly averse to tattoo's on a woman.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by David Cobb on 12 August 2004 at 07:16 AM.]</p></FONT>

How do you feel about body modifications, such as implants? I live in Los Angeles, need I say more.

Judging from what I see on TV these days it seems like silicone brains are the latest fad. Don't like it at all.......

Chas, I guess I just like the girls to rely on their natural attributes.
If they aren't interesting enough as is, the silicone, hardware and ink aren't gonna improve anything. Image
Which reminds me, Dolly P. even has implants on her calves.
That explains why her legs always looked peculiar to me.
I can't imagine Connie Smith looking better with a bolt in her tongue and a dragon on her back, but then maybe she has that and we just don't know it.
Only Marty knows for sure. Image

Bill, in all seriousness, if it has a lot of meaning for you and you think it will retain its meaning and value 20 or 30 years from now, maybe. What looks good on paper doesn't necessarily look good in skin, that's in, not on, skin. That's why a lot of tattoos look like decals that were just stuck on. The tattoo is in reality a form of make-up, that should follow the flow and shapes of the muscle groups where it's applied. For instance, back tattoos should enhance the "V".

Also they don't do well in sunlight and over time, whatever-it-was starts to look like an over-cooked pizza with everything.

Of course if it's small enough, you could put it anywhere. I was going to get a small dragon and Cliff asked if I wanted a dragon or a lizard......

Well, I was like b0b up until recently. Now I'm seriously considering getting a sax on one deltoid, and maybe a short musical passage on a wavy staff on the other. But what should the music be? There's only room for a couple of measures. I would go for a pedal steel, but no one would know what the heck it is.

I was thinking of getting a tattoo all over my body of me, only taller.
