Twin guitar leads

Post by Tony Palmer »

Seems every top 40 modern country song has a ripping twin guitar solo, with extra tight two note harmony.
How do you think this is usually done....
Same guy, double tracking?
Two guys with incredible chops?
One guy with harmonizer?

double stops, its amazing what some people can do with them, I heard a Redd Volkaert solo I coulnt believe wasnt done with a harmonizer, but it wasnt, it was double stops.

If you want to hear great double and triple stops, check out a Scotty Anderson CD.

Hook's right! I don't hear much about Scotty Anderson, but he'll blow you away - he 'double-stops' so cleanly and so fast that it's hard to believe it isn't tracked. The 'Hot Licks' Video proves that it's just one pass at it!

What a monster, and what a good understanding of advanced chords, too - one of the very best Tele players ever....

Does anyone know where he is now?

Wow, Scotty Anderson!
I had no idea who he was when I got that video.
So smooth. I learned a lot of his licks, but can't play his style of using the back of the fingernail.

Herbie Wallace played and performed a bit with him. I don't know what Scotty's doing now.

Jimmy Dickens on his OLD, OLD Columbia records used twin lead guitars and they were great instrumental parts. Emmons also did some, I believe it was, with the two others.

Jerry Reid and another picker, had a TV Show some years ago, and as out of sync as Jerry is, the other guy hung right in there with him. Don't care for his style, but as far as musicianship, I've never heard ANYTHING as tight and enjoyable to hear.

I have played bass with Scotty several times when he comes down to the Atlanta area. Just me, him and a drummer. We get along musically so well because I play fingerstyle on a tricked out six string bass through two amps and can support him with chords and such. I can run with him for the first couple of sets but about the last set he calls up Cherokee or Orange Blossom Special so fast that I just break out in a sweat when he counts it off!!! He plays so good all night and then just kicks into another gear and I can't believe what he does. I put him above Danny Gatton and that is saying something!!

Scotty has an incredible finger style approach to the guitar and his forte is all that double, triple stop stuff that sounds like two or three guitar players playing together. And man he is the nicest most humble cat you can imagine. Beautiful player that deserves to be heard more. Country, jazz, rock, you name it-he can do it.

It was me who mentioned the video, Dave....

It's one of Arlen Roth's 'Hot Licks' series, and Arlen plays rhythm guitar behind Scotty.

I don't buy instructional videos as a rule - but I heard 'Mystery Train' from Anderson's first CD, and HAD to see it with my own eyes!

Funnily enough, I met Arlen a few weeks later in Rudy's Guitars on 48th St, and I quizzed him on the tape. He said, 'That's not an instruction tape - all you do is watch it with your mouth open; who could LEARN that stuff?'

Tongue-in-cheek maybe, but I thought it an amusing comment from the video's producer....

I was starting to believe no-one else knew of this guy - thanks, Joey, Hook and Bill!

Sorry, but I've never heard the term "double stop". Care to explain?

A double stop is two notes sounded at the same time. In this context a harmonized musical line.

And to add to what Leon said, add sometimes a third note ( triple stop ) to a lightning fast riff that most could only do in single notes. Thats Scotty !
