Ollabelle

Post by Steve Hitsman »

Just got back from visiting relatives in Columbus, OH, where I had the great fortune of hearing Mrs. Costello (Diana Krall) perform at the Palace. Diana was amazing but the big surprise was the opening act. If you appreciate gospel, spirituals, folk, old-timey, etc. you'll love this group. Steel connection? They do feature some dobro. I bought their CD and that IS Levon Helm's daughter up front.

I heard a story on Olabelle on NPR and was incredibly moved by their music. It was one of those rare times where I had to pull the car off the road because I was so taken in by what I was hearing. Incredible!

I immediately ordered their CD and, to my dismay, found that I liked it but that to my ears it didn't really come close to capturing the power of their live performance on NPR.

I'd sure like to hear them live in person. I thought it was pretty powerful stuff.

Makes me wonder if the original Ola Belle (Reed) will finally get some of the recognition she's deserved for so long.
[This message was edited by Chris Bauer on 30 June 2004 at 08:17 PM.]

Theresa, Diana Krall's cd Live in Paris is also available on dvd. If you don't have it, you need to get it.

Thanks for clearing up the origin of Ollabelle's name.

A folk group I play with, The Remnants, shared a gig with them a few months ago in Fall River, MA. They had a nice blend of gospel, bluegrass, and "singer-songwriter" stuff. And nice folks, too.
