W.s., no Steel?

Post by Roger Shackelton »

On Sunday I went to the N.W. Folklife Festival, at the Seattle Center. I saw several performances and at 6 P.M. I went to see the Paul Anastasio Western Swing Band. Paul's band consists of 3 Fiddlers, 3 Guitar players(1 Lead and 2 Rhythm). 1 Electric Bass Player and 1 Drummer.
8 musicians and no steel. ??

Paul Anastasio went by the name Paul Anastasia when he played fiddle for Merle Haggard in the 1970s.

Bobby Lee, I've picked with Paul A. back in the mid 1970s, he can play is rear off! I don't know what you heard, or who he was playing with, but when we played, he really played. Period, the end!

Paul Anastasio is the Django Rheinhardt of the violin/fiddle.

I totally agree with Gary.

I was making a pun on his name, Gary. Sorry. I'll shut up now.

I had the pleasure of working with Paul in the early 80's for almost a year on the road. Very dedicated musician and spent almost every waking minute with either a fiddle or mando in his hands (or searching for vintage 40's records). We dubbed him "The Human Fill" because anytime there was a lull or a brief pause in normal conversations, he'd fill it with licks or melodies.

Was able to witness a lot of funny stuff with Paul. If anyone knows how to reach him, I'd appreciate knowing.
