Marty Stewart on the Oprey

Last night on the Oprey, I watched Joe Nickels, Tracy Laurance, and Blake Sheldon (I'm not sure of the spelling of their names) sing an infomercial of their songs.

Very good musicians played the songs note for note, and very well and in the interviews that preceeded each performance, the singers all spoke with the same accent.
(Who knew that they all came from the same block of the same town.)
I wish them all well, but they bored me.

Then at the end of the show, Marty came out with 3 singing sidemen, 1 guitar and sang around 1 mike, and totally blew me away with a gospel song. The sound and performance of the song was electric.
What a BIG difference!

Well, I for one liked what I saw on the opry last night. It seems to me to be much better since GAC took over. for some reason the commercial breaks didn't seem to happen as often, or either were better presented to that effect. I'm normally not a Marty Stuart fan per se(sp) but last night he was exceptionally "hot".What really impressed me was his "dead-pan, Buddy Holly look alike" lead guitarist. When they started "Luther Played The Boogie", I expected a mundane version of a Cash classic, but during the ride, that guy flat wiped me out ! (OBTW, who was that unmasked man anyway?) In the radio business, we had a saying about other DJ's that had deep mellow voices. " I hate that guy".
I say that about Marty too. "I hate that guy", not because of his voice but because he's married to Connie Smith.

I've been in love with her for over 30 years. Darn his onry hide anyway hehe.

I tuned into the webcast in the middle of Brokenheartsville. Ive always liked Time Marches On and Marty also did Farmers Blues.

I will say Gac formats differently and acts don't come on regemented segments. The featured guest might be on somewhere in both half hours.

I haven't seen the Opry forever, but the last time I caught Marty on TV, the fabulous Kenny Vaughn was playing guitar with him. It was probably him if he reiminds you of Holley.

I got lucky and caught part of the Oprey. Marty put on a good show and what I enjoyed was that he spotlighted the guitar picker and just seemed to be having a great time.

John: I havn't had a chance to see this week's opry yet. But that unmasked man you're speaking of..it probably is Haril Hinsley (don't know if I have the spelling right) he is a DJ On WSM AM..and serves as one of the opry announcers. Usually, he's working during that part of the opry broadcast. So if they're going according to schedule, it probably was him.

Tom, I was referring to Marty's picker with a tongue in cheek pun.(albeit, kinda lame

at that)I was just amazed at his dexterity and speed. It just floored me to see a musician turned loose on the opry to really show his stuff. Thanks for the reply Jerry.(I could never NOT recognize a voice like Harl Hinsley.)

Marty's guitar player is Kenny Vaughan, and he is a monster guitar player. Ultimate style and feel, thats why he plays with Marty. He is considered one of the top lead players in Nashville by his peers. I saw him years ago with Rodney Crowell live and he blew us away with taste and attack. His wife is Carmella Ramsey who is another monster mandolin/ fiddle player and singer. She plays with Patty Loveless. Add Harry Stinson and Brian Glenn on vocals and you have a magic combo. I suppose it would be fair to state that the show has made improvements since GAC took over ..just keep in mind that GAC is not the show producer, they are the cable broadcast station that has the contract to air the show .

IF I was affiliated with GAC I would be looking to some how some way get to more TV sets than 25 million.

It is still my understanding that GAC viewership is still in the 25 million homes range..down from CMT's 75 million..

Still not on DTV or my Southeast Time Warner Cable supplier.

I guess I would be wondering how GAC plans to maintain the cost of the high priced contract long term....

Glad to hear that the Opry is still on someones TV though...

I've got a video tape of Kenny Vaughn when he was playing with Patty Loveless on Austin City Limits. He was playing a green G&L Strat style guitar and just burned that thing up. I can't remember the name of the song but it was one of Patty's up tempo things. Anyway, Kenny did about a minute and a half or so of just himself playing a solo intro without the band and it was amazing. He's one cool picker for sure...JH

GAC is on Dish Network. Can't rememeber the channel, as I just got my dish. (Haven't got all those #s memorized yet!) It's one the reason I left my cable provider, and it's about the same cost and a whole lot more channels!

John: Sorry about the mix-up; you all have given me something to look forward to as I still havn't had a chance to look at my tape of Saturday's opry. Am currently listening to the archived "Opry Warm-up" show..and at this moment, they're talking with Marty and Jessie Macreynolds. Once I finish listening to this show, I do plan to check out the televised opry.

Kenny is indeed a fine player, originally from Denver, Colorado. He studied guitar with Johnny Smith among others, and pioneered many styles of music here, from punk to country. We played hundreds of gigs together through the 80's and 90's, and just did a session with him last month. I did some of my best ever playing with him, cause you had to to keep up

Brian Glenn (Nolf) is from Traverse City, Michigan and was in a family band here in Michigan called "The Nolfs". He went to Nashville about 12 or 13 years ago with my former drummer Kevin Crampton. Brian is also a great singer in addition to his fine bass playing. BTW, Kevin ended up working with The McCarters, Lari White,Jodee Messina and Michael Peterson. He was married to Jennifer McCarter.

The Opry can be found at http://www.wsmonline.com on Friday & Saturday nights. Then, from that page, just put your cursor on "listen" and then click on "listen live" in the dropdown list. There are many other options there too.

Just to add to that..if you're interested, if you miss a particular broadcast (or I guess you'd call it "webcast) you can listen to archived shows. From that same "WSM" homepage, click on the "archive" link; then click "Grand Ole Opry (it may say, "Saturday Grand Ole Opry) from there, just click on the particular show you want to listen to from the shows they have listed; I think they keep them up there for about a month. This is how I'm usually able to listen to the opry as I am usually out pickin' on Saturday nights.
