? for anybody who's been to Nashville lately

Post by Ward Wilsey »

Here's a funny phenomenon I've noticed everytime I've been to Nashville the past 3 years (about 6 times). Everytime I go to Lower Broad, there's always at least one or two carbon copies of current country stars who ask to go up and sing with the bands. I don't mean "Wow, that guy sounds like Kenny Chesney", I mean "That guys dresses, sounds like, talks like and completely copies the mannerims of Kenny Chesney to a T". Besides the Chesney clone, I've seen a Keith Urban clone (actually onstage playing guitar with a band) and a Tim McGraw clones (best imitation I've ever seen..had the black hat, and the patented tuck the right hand into your jacket move..amazing!). I've seen a few other less talented clones as well. I think these people think they're going to get noticed by becoming the likeness of a famous star. Incredible stuff! Has anyone else noticed this?

Ever since Buddy Emmons arrived on the scene with his non-conformist cowboy hat....there have been a land slide of steel pickers that are now wearing hats of every size, style and description. Better players...? Or, just followers of "fad"?
At least Buddy was an "original".......

Lowest Broad has always been a collection point, for lack of a better word, "Characters"

In the early 70's, it was Broadway Mae, City View, Muscles and S__king Sue.

Don't see where it should be a whole lot different these days except for newer and different "Characters"

Back in the '60's, I was in the Detroit area. We used to go to hall in the suburbs and watch the Motown "farm teams". They were singers signed with Motown and in groups that copied the major groups. I saw Cindy Birdsong singing with a "Supremes" copy long before she moved up to the real thing! I understand that some of the others would "sub" for members of the real groups when needed.

Perhaps the farm team concept has spread to Nashville?

Darn John, I do believe you've been here!
The BR-549 clones always get me. When these guys started making some noise you started to see upright bassists, non-pedal players (kinda) old clothes from the thrift shops and fedoras everywhere. At this time it's not uncommon to see this here and some even go out and find a vintage old car to park out front, Buddy Holly glasses you name it. Kind of cool but not very original.
Another side to this is maybe they're keeping some of the old tradition alive and that's not a bad thing.
