Getting Inspired

Post by Lyle Bradford »

Most of us were inspired to play steel because of a good country song or shuffle with good steel in it. In the last 2 years has there been a song that would inspired you to pick up the instument if you were just starting?

Most people just starting know nothing about steel radio. They only know what is on the comercial airwaves.Based upon what they are playing now is it enough to inspire you to start playing steel?

I force myself to listen to and watch a bit of New Country, (mainly to see what everyone is bitchin' about! Image)
Fact is, there is steel on almost everything I hear on CMT and Top 40 Country stations.
Not much in the way of blazing steel solos, but plenty of texturing and cliche' twanginess.
My guess is that there are and/or will be many a steeler sporn of the New Country repitoire' (from guitar player stock most likely) simply due to a cover bands need to sound "just like the record".
I'm sure the same goes for fiddle playes players taking up mandolin, fiddle/mando/guitar players taking up banjo, etc.

Well, i'm going to generalize your thread because: 1) I don't play steel and 2) This forum is "topics not directly related to steel".

I'd like the opportunity to tell you that 2 yrs ago I bought a ZOOM PS-02 recorder solely to work on the tune The Country Beat that I posted here the other day. Amazingly, the sound of the patches and the available background patterns caused an enormous amount of inspiration for me and my electric guitar which has led to a whole style that i'm working on with about 15 working musical ideas. So, I owe my new style to the ZOOM, and my recent return to Country music appreciation to the Forum. Without either I'd probably be playing midi instruments and electronic music.

Now there's a true story of unintended inspiration.
[This message was edited by erik on 02 November 2003 at 11:17 AM.]

Seems like there was a Travis Tritt song with some Robby Turner? licks on FM radio that jumped out and grabbed me, it's been a few months ago.
Don't know how the song did on the charts.
I also like "In My Dreams", the new Rick Trevino song, Dan Dugmore on steel, kind of a torch song I guess.
Another one, something about Prying My Cold Dead Fingers from the Wheel by Leland somebody or other, has some nice steel in it.
[This message was edited by David Cobb on 04 November 2003 at 10:36 PM.]

If I was just starting out,
any John Hughey solo
on a Vince Gill ballad
would definitely inspire me.
