Pop Go the Dixie Chicks
Feeling shunned by Country Music, the Dixie Chicks no longer feel a part of it. This report says they now feel more a part of Rock 'n Roll music -- since they're winning Grammy's and not CMA awards.

Smart move. To my way of thinking (which is admittedly conservative and old-fashioned), they were kind of a cross between ABBA and the Nitty-Gritty Dirt Band, anyway. Except for their song "Tonight, The Heartaches On Me", I can't recall anything else really "country" that they did. They did use acoustic instruments a lot, so maybe I could accept classifying them as more "Folk-Rock" than anything.
They'll do well shifting to a rock act...it really helped LeAnn Rimes career.

Possible translation..oopps..ask Leanne Rimes about crossover..and that from a young gal who can really sing..
Crossover..to rock and roll..uuhhmm
"We sing Country Blugrass sorta tunes , our primary Instruments are an Electric Banjo and a Fiddle...and we are now ready for Rock and Roll".."Where the fans Love and appreciate us "..."All we have to do to complete the crossover is to add a real wild Lead Guitar player with a Marshall Stack ..and we're in baby" ..."oh yeh..and we need to show our navals a bit more, and if we kiss each other on stage we won't even need a hit record ! "
Girls..news flash..you had tons of fans..more than one could ever hope for..
Where did they go ?
Ohh-Tay !!

Fred, I thought I heard (correctly) that figure from a D.J. on Country radio playing in the other room, but that sounded like a lot of cash to me too.
It's more like $6.8 mil (Net),that's for touring, recording and publishing combined. But it still puts them on par with other big selling acts like:
Strait $6.7 mil (Net)
Chesney $7 mil (Net)
Twain $6.4 (Net)
Please accept my apologies for my error, I need to go choke a DJ.

I hear their CD and I think country.
Maybe poppy acoustic country, but it sure sounds country to me.
If they cross over and still do some things that sound true to a bluegrass roots idea, I am all for it. It's good for country in the long run It will expand the fan base.
I have no problem taking a song from a non country source and doing it country style. A good song is a good song.

Is that all there is to it these days....just declare yourself something that your not....and then you are? Is anymore proof needed that today it's the "image" rather than the music?
I hope they are more successful in calling their music "Rock & Roll", than some of the rock & roll musicians have had calling their music "Country"!
I think I'll just declare myself a "jazz" musician!

Despite what many here might WISH would happen, the Chicks aren't going anywhere soon. Too much talent, solid writing, and sales to disappear. The only country acts disappearing from the radar are the classic ones-due to a lack of support from their supposed fan base, and misconceptions in the industry about how many copies a classic country act should be able (or required) to sell.
Ms. Maines comments were not out of line with the views of the majority of their real audience, who are not your hard core country freaks, and never have been. A lot more people agree with her than you might think, although none of them are here. Political commentary is a much larger staple in the rock and Pop world-always has been-and is in fact encouraged. So it makes sense that they would quit trying to placate the relatively small and conservative real country crowd. If every REAL country fan on the planet quit buying their albums and going to their shows, no one would ever notice. The plus for country having the Chicks around is that if even 5% of their fan base looks into their roots and influences, they may decide they like what they hear and start buying some of it.
Keeping real country alive is going to require getting more people into the tent. You will not like most of their politics, because most of the "Americana" phreaks are very liberal, but that's where our new market is. If you keep running them off, we might as well have the funeral now.

I normally leave this tyupe of discussion alone but have had enough. I like the chicks...MUSICLY I like a lot of acts...Musicly... but what made their lavish living was not their opinions it was their....you guessed it...MUSIC!!! In the past if "stars had a problem about something they wrote a song about it! They didn't have to run around trying to act like a politician...If you don't like what our goverment is doing you have choices...Write a song in opposition like haggard, cash, dylan, MItchell, or other people did...but don't wine and cry because the whole world isn't on your side. that's AMERICA!! remember. as far as i'm concerned when it comes to music and politics i do this. I vote!!!! I write!!!! and most of all I sing!!!. So come on, girls shut up and do what you do best. Music!!! I could really
care less what your political veiws.. PLAY..and go do it where ever you want to because in todays music is "genre" really that important???? I like their stuff not much to look at tho(woops their goes that darned opinion thing again!!!ain't america great!!!)look forward to your next album on what ever label it comes out on just make sure their's no speech's about your opinions. wheeeww now that thats over i'm ready for some apple pie and a Merle haggard album...later

Jim, you didn't ask ME but ...
I do indeed think that their discourse would have been at least somewhat better received in a song. No doubt about it. For one thing, it would have been what they're paid to do. A song would have been better thought out than Natalie's emotional outburst.
I respectfully disagree with Merle Haggard's notion that they've been ridiculed for speaking their mind. They've been ridiculed for what they -- actually she-- said and where she said it. No one denied their right to freedom of speech. It's just that when entertainers (mis)use their media access to take an unpopular view there is little the public can do besides stop supporting their celebrity status -- stop buying their records, movie tickets, etc. It's the public's only way of saying, "We disagree!"
I hope they'll lay low for awhile and just focus on music. Country music fans are a forgiving lot, and in good time we may forgive Natalie's actions.
