Somebody was out of key, and totally. It was like people were playing two totally different songs. Our group was playing a festival Saturday afternoon, and we did a last minute song change of a song we have not done that much...To make a long story short, the song was suppose to be in E but the singer thought it was G, and then I kicked it off in D; was a mess, but by the time the verse started we all ended up in G; the singer was pleased to learn she could sing it in G also; so, stuff happens, but then I am not Tommy White (or a real steel player for that matter anyway).

I walked in the room in the middle of his solo, so I did not hear the first part...I just thought "wow, left field" for "Back in Baby's Arms" the solo seemed to end in the right key, then right after his solo Hoot and the other fiddler played the melody...quite a contrast!
This was the second week in a row he played the Carter, sounded pretty good too....

Stephan Winters,
Thank you for your kind post.
The Amy Grant song began in the key of G and my solo was to begin in the key of G#,just like we rehearsed it an hour before T.V. time.
No witch hunt or finger pointing here. However, I did start, play and finish the solo in the predetermined key without budging! Ha-ha, as everyone heard. After realizing more than half the band was not going to make the modulation to the new key, it was to late to turn back. It's live TV and radio. It happens. I just wish it had not happened on my solo!heh-heh

Don't worry Mr. White, most folks never knew the difference...my wife had not even noticed the key difference before I mentioned it. I could tell the way that your solo kicked off that the rest of the band was supposed to have kicked it up a notch for the steel ride, but failed to do so. ha. Thanks for the comments....

Thanks for "the rest of the story", Tommy.
When I listened to the tape, I thought "That modal jazz solo isn't right for this traditional tune. What's he thinking?".
Now I know.

One little tidbit I failed to mention in my last post is , after the show, Vince grabbed my arm and said, "what's a half step among friends?" with a little chuckle.
By the way, Johnny Cox played a very fine swing solo on Amy's recording of that song along with the Timejumpers.
That truly is , the rest of the story.
T.W.

A few summers ago I kicked of a song 1/2 step below the rehearsed key at a live show in Kansas.(And never looked back)
The whole time thinking I was right and that the rest of the band would finally catch on.
It was a real show stopper. Chad stopped the song and we all had a big laugh at my expense.
I can say now it was worth it.
