Billy Strange

Post by Chuck S. Lettes »

A few years ago I picked up a CD entitled "Strange Country," a recording featuring guitarist Billy Strange on an acoustic guitar doing some folk style tunes. Later I noticed that he was featured on many recordings with Speedy West and others on Capital Records during the l950s. I recently read that he even worked with Phil Spector as part of his "Wall of Sound." Does anyone know more about this fine guitarist?

MUCH more information can be found here: http://www.billystrangemusic.com/

Go the "Forum" link and you will find all kinds of stuff, including news about a new Nancy Sinatra/Lee Hazelwood album Mr Strange is working on, reminiscences on Jimmie Bryant, Speedy West and others, and even contributions from our own Antipodean auteur, the legendary Jason Odd Image
It's fascinating to read.
Enjoy

He was not just an outstanding guitar player, but a terrific singer too. German Cow Girl Boy -label has released an album of his Capitol sides, Speedy and Jimmy Bryant as sidemen. Billy has a very strong voice and he can belt out strong r&b ( he's the vocalist on Cliffie Stone's "Barracuda" ) or smooth down on the country crooners. Billy's website is great; check out the photos from Vegas with Speedy, Les Carrot Top Andersson and Bud Isaacs.
[This message was edited by Jussi Huhtakangas on 30 April 2003 at 10:50 AM.]

And now for a little trivia: Billy's son was a member of what reasonably-famous country group just a few years ago?
(Forgive me if the info is posted on the web-site. I haven't visited it yet.)
