Any Mike Oldfield fans?
In the now closed "Those Dixie Chicks" thread in events and announcements, a reference was made to Mike Oldfield. Oldefield does not play steel, and his music is very different from mine, but he was one of my major musical influences, so much so that I consider him nothing less than one of my 3 or 4 musical fathers. Anybody who has my CDs will hear it the instant they listen to any of his recordings.
Is anybody else here familiar with his work?

Mike,
Is Mike Oldfield, the Michael Oldield of
"TUBULAR BELLS" fame?
"Tubular Bells" was a way-out composite album, highly orchestral - back in the mid
hippy-dippy era; and I think about the time of "Switched
On Bach" - employing a new revolutionary keyboard - the Moog Synthesizer.
Some great innovative stuff here.

Chip and Steve, you are both correct. It is the same Mike Oldfield, and Tubular Bells was the theme for the Exorcist.
But Tubular bells was only one of several of Oldfield's recordngs and IMHO not his best. Like I said, his music is a lot different from mine, but nevertheless was a major influence on me. Anybody even vaguely familiar with my stuff will hear it as soon as they listen to any of Oldfield's work.

Thanks Geoff...That was IT! You just reminded
me [us]........that was the outrageousness of Michael Oldfield....a very young dude.....
and played, if not all [can't quite remember
exactly]...all of the instruments.
And listed in the array of instruments, were
a handful that came from Mars, not to mention just your average run-of-the-mill
orchestral instruments.
I do believe, buried in my dusty stacks of real vinyl 33 LPs is "Tubular Bells".
Oh, and by the way, Michael OldPerlowin, thanks for the critique on Tubular Bells. Maybe it wasn't his best, as you suggest,
but to me it was just unbelievable....considering such a young musician...could have that "far-out-avantgarde-display".....when we look at this
in context, Tubular Bells was an amazing thing for such a ripe and up-and-coming-mind.
No?
