Detuners?

You'd think that after more than 50 years in the business I'd know what to call 'em.

Maybe a "Scruggs Tuner", maybe a "B Bender", I'm not sure. Anyway, the guitar player in our band wants to be able to lower his 6'th string on his Tele down to D and then back up to E and be able to tune it. He is actually a very accomplished guitar player, but neither of us know who to contact about such a thing.
Any help would be appreciated.

"Scruggs Tuners" or "Keith Tuners" are common terms.
Do a search at www.google.com and you'll find a lot of sources.

A set has two types, one peg designed to lower a whole tone, the other a half tone. If you can buy just one, you want the whole tone for "Dropped D" tuning.

That's the "Hipshot Style" D Tuner, Jon.
It does the same thing for a lower price.

Clarence White's Frankenstein Tele, now owned by Marty Stuart, uses the "Keith Pegs".

Bobby, I have a "hipshot". The E to D change is a little lever you just flip, works like a charm, and installed with no surgery to the Tele - i even did it myself and I am not even remotely handy. Highly recommended.

Bobby, for what your Guitar man wants, the Hipshot is probably the best idea. They make several versions to match different style guitar tuners, very good quality and far cheaper thann the Scruggs style.

Hipshot makes a replacement machine head, that lowers the E to D. It is not the hip lever D tuner combo, but a replacement tuner, either Shaller or Grover type. Stewart MacDonald has them.

Hey Bobby,
If all he wants to do is lower the E to D then I'd try the Schaller D-tuners. The HipShot unit costs $54.55 in the Stewart/MacDonald catalog and only lowers the low E. For $69.92 you can get a set of the Schallers in which you get two banjo style tuners to come out of the back of your headstock replacing the regular tuning peg. You can either put them on both E's or you can put them on two different guitars if you want. The part number is 5275 for the nickle ones or the p/n for gold keys is 5275G. I have the HipShot unit on two of my guitars and the banjo type on two electrics and an acoustic and they by far work better as you can do lowers right in the middle of a solo for some interesting effects. Jerry is right. The hipshot is OK if you want to flip between E and D, but the banjo tuners give the gradual change, slow or fast.
