Gettin' Paid

Recently injured, I have lost the ability to turn my left wrist and can no longer control dexterous movements of my fingers. As a result I can no longer play my guitar, bass, sax, drums, the full keys of my keyboard, my fiddle or mandolin. In effect my life has been dramatically altered leaving me 'useless' as a musician.

Ah, but hope springs eternal and now I have a renewed motivation to become proficient with the steel guitar, an instrument I have long held in awe, but have not persued. I am using instructional materials, and advice from people available through forum to learn this wonderful instrument.

My question: What is the earning potential of a proficient steel guitar player?
How about it Tommy White, can you make a reasonable living playing for a house band?

NOT in OREGON...........$40 to $60 per nite
is a typical average. Some likely make more
but in general, one should anticipate making a life style adjustment. Sorry!

Of course it depends on how good you are, how well you get along with others, and the job opportunities in your area. Tommy White is one of the cream of the crop in the first two areas and in the most recognizable seat in the world for the third.

The chances of any of us attaining his stature are next to nil. Smiley Roberts said it best with, "As a steel player you can makes tens of dollars."

I've been playing around 30 years - I'm maybe a notch above your garden variety steel player and last year I raked in a tad less than $15k playing around L.A. That,my wife's salary and my studio income allow me to exist.

I never get paid. All the money gets recycled into recording and pressing costs. Mabye someday I will get some gas money.
