I remember years ago when he worked in the LA area at the old Blue Room in La Puente. His band was called "Johnny Paycheck and the Cashiers". Paycheck was playing some steel then and doing a lot of controlled substances but he could still sing his @ss off. About 10 or 12 years ago we had him and his band for our headliner at the George D. Hay annual banquet and dance for the Virgina Country Music Association. I got the chance to talk to him about the old days in SoCal. We knew a lot of the same people and it was enjoyable. I requested him to sing "For a Minute There" but he killed the song. That was always my favorite ballad and he did a lot of scatting on the vocal which I didn't like. He later redeemed himself when he did "Don't Take Her She's All I Got"....JP and the harmony singer were having a ball. They's sing the line, Friend, don't "Snake" her, she's all I got. My wife and I were busting up as it seemed like no one in the audience except us was hearing what they said. RIP, truly one of the greatest song stylists who ever lived and needs to be in the HOF......JH
