I saw Hank III last night
I saw Hank III last night in a real sh!thole of a place called the Mason Jar in Phoenix. It is mainly a punk rock venue and I guess that is where Hank III is in his element and where his major fan base is. WOW! Hank Sr. reincarnated as loud punk/country/punkabilly/major-attitude performer!!! I enjoyed it but then my tastes are very broad. Definitely not for the country music traditionalist. The instrumentation was authentic. Acoustic (electrified) guitar, doghouse bass, tripple neck steel (no pedals) on stand, fiddle (electrified), electric guitar, and drums. Pure energy, attitude, loud, defiant, "hellbilly", rebellious, and talented. Listen at your own risk - or if you are inclined to take risks, enjoy!
my ears are still ringin!

I don't know the names of any of the musicians. The guitar player was good but I wouldn't characterize it as country. He played rock to some of Hank's "country" songs. It worked though because Hanks treatment of his country music is high energy, fast, punkabilly. The best comparison I could make would be that it is the "Stray Cats" of country music! I enjoyed it!

Denison was the guy from Jesus Lizard right?
I don't think he's with H3 anymore;
apparently these days Shelton does 2 sets - #1 retro (albeit jacked up a bit) and then he gives a "disclaimer" and the second is punk thrash metal or whatever.
A couple of us saw him here a few years ago when he had Big Jim Murphy on steel and Don Herron on fiddle, Denison on guitar and the show was fantastic
Check out the message board on his website sometime - some of the "discussion" makes even the worst moments of our little PSG cyberworld seem tame by comparison
