Don Bowman Question

Post by Jim Florence »

Have you ever heard of Don Bowman? He recorded "Chit Adkins, Make me a star" and what I'm really looking for is "I never did finish that song" Cost is no object in getting a copy of it. I never heard of him again, but the first side showed up on a compilation from Bear familly or something like that>

Don was a real comic. He did a lot of "drunk" songs and I had two 33 RPM albums of him. I'll check to see if I still have them. If so, I check for the specific song you ask for.

He was funny.

I heard Bill Anderson say in an interview once that Don Bowman was the guy who gave Bill his nickname "Whisperin' Bill".

I have a Don Bowman vinyl at home. I'll see if it has that song on it. It's the album where he calls up and abuses Ralph Emery.

Leroy, Bob-did your Don Bowman recordings have the duet with Skeeter Davis? -I think the title or one of the main lines was " Baby Its Cold Outside". He was a very funny entertainer-reminds me a little of the comic from years ago-Bro. Dave Gardner. Have any of you on the forum heard any of his material?

Yeah Butch, I was a real fan of Bro Dave. I still have both of his vinyl albums. Do you know of the tragic circumstances that probably helped him into an untimely grave?

Well, the Don Bowman album I have is called "Still Fighting Mental Stability" (or something like that.) Unfortunately, it doesn't have the song you're looking for Jim. It has "Hey Mr. DJ", a bit where he calls up Ralph Emery and abuses him. I always figured either 1.) he really didn't like Ralph, or 2.) they were pretty good friends and he was just having some fun. Anybody got the skinny on that?

There's also a song called "Willon and Wayley" where Waylon and Willie sing backups. It's a fun album which I haven't played in years. Guess I'll have to see if the record player still works. Image

Butch, I don't really know if the record has the song, "Baby, it's cold outside" but I'm not real sure that Don did that song with Skeeter Davis. Perhaps she did.

BTW, how is Skeeter doing with her cancer fight? Anyone know?

Butch,
You may be thinking of a parody of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Homer & Jethro with June Carter. Just chiming in. Jason P.S. the version I spoke of is pretty funny!!!

I believe Don Bowman was originally from Lubbock and was around in the original Buddy, Tommy Allsup, Waylon days. When Waylon was out in Phoenix and LA, Don used to fly out there and they had marathon songwriting sessions. Just To Satisfy You was one of the classic songs that came from those sessions.

In Waylon's autobiography, he talks quite a lot about Don Bowman - apparently they were both DJs on a radio station in Lubbock during the same period. They used to fool around so much, both on- and off-air, that the owner eventually put a sign up in the studio... "Don Bowman and Waylon Jennings are NOT permitted to be in this studio at the same time" Image

I finally got the time to check my files about the Skeeter-Don duet.
It was a single(Baby Its Cold Outside/bw For Loving You-) I don't have a date but estimate the mid to late 60's. RCA47-9415. Don't know if it made it onto an album-sort of doubt it- have any of you on theforum heard this song? I heard the 'Cold Outside' tune played on Emery's show. I now wonder if they made a paradyof of'For Loving You' or if it is a regular arrangement. Earl, Gregg, did you hear Skeeter say anything about this recording? Anyone who has heard this recording, please fill us in. Looking forward to hearing more about this fine comic

Got it''' Had a fellow send me the tape today. I won't mention his name as he doesn't post here but he read this thread and sent me the album I've been hunting. I'm eternally gratefull to him for this as I've been hunting it for years. The album is "Our
man in trouble", and has "I never did finish that song" on it.Thanks to everyone who responded, a lot of fond memories have resurfaced.
