Two Steelers!!!!

Post by jlsmith48 »

In 1966,while in the US Army, I heard a good country band at the NCO Club at Ft. Bliss Tx. The name of the band was "The Starliters". The band accually had {2} pedal steel players on stage. One of them doubled on trombone. I think it was Feb 1966. Any old timers out there that remembers this group??

J.L. I lived in El Paso back then.I don't recall that band.I played Bass for Charlie Cook.We played Ft.Bliss NCO many times. We had Hollis Prichitt on steel then.Did you ever make the Red Barn on Alameda or Tom Bells on Dyer Street, played them a bunch also.I'll get with Hollis and see if he remembers them. I was stationed at Ft.Hood from 1966-68 in the 1st Armored Division,Old Ironsides.I was sent to Ft.Bliss for a couple of months on TDY in early 1967.I can't recall the band you mention.
I actually played in a lot of clubs in the area and I remember having to cross a bridge for a penny to get to them.I quit going there when some nice young lady gave me a present I couldn't refuse and I had to pay a visit to someone to help me get rid of it. Image

I was playing the NCO clubs in Ft Hood & Ft Bliss with Merl Lindsay's band back in those days. I don't remember whether it was that girl or a drunk First Sgt that decided to whip me during intermission once because my "hair was too long"! Maybe it was one of you guys! Image www.genejones.com

Wasn't me Gene. When I worked the NCO Clubs I was on the bandstand. I only made it to Spec 4 so I couldn't get in unless I was playing. You had to be an E-5 or better to get in.
Boy...has this thread taken a turn for the worse. Image

Played a lot of NCO Clubs in the mid to late sixty's. I was stationed at Kelly AFB. We played Ft. Sam Houston Army NCO Club. A couple of guys came up and ask for a request. You can imagine my surprise when I realized later that they put a large GO NAVY bumper sticker on my Fender 1000. I didn't even know until I took a brake. That went over real well. I was Air Fore playing at the army post with a GO NAVY sticker.
