Run C & W
Anybody who takes country very seriously had better stop reading now, but I heard a brilliant CD at the Upton Jazz Festival yesterday and I wonder if anyone else knows it.
It was by Run C & W and consisted of Bluegrass versions of Soul hits like Wilson Pickett's "Midnight Hour" and Otis Redding's "My Girl".
My first reaction was to laugh, but some of those tunes work so well bluegrass style that they could become part of the repertoire. And the playing is wonderful with some nice resonator guitar (which may or may not be a Dobro!) Did anybody on here play it?
If you have a sense of humour and like bluegrass I recommend it, and I'm looking for a copy!
Cheers

From AMG:
"Former Eagle Bernie Leadon, former Amazing Rhythm Ace Russell Smith, and Nashville songwriters Vince Melamed and Jim Photoglo formed this novelty act in Nashville clubs, playing soul music "the way it ought to be played — bluegrass style."
Not sure who the dobro player is, I'm afraid

I saw these guys in Brooklyn a few years ago. They performed in 'fat suits'--over-stuffed warmup track suits--looked sort of like the Michelin man. They did what they did well enough to pull it off. But it's a one joke gag that sort of wore thin real fast for me. It didn't help that they were on a bill with the very excellent Cox Family and sort of detracted from the Cox's very sincere vibe. But like I said, they did their thing well. Others have done convincing BlueGrass conversions of pop tunes--who did the Beatle's "I've just seen a face"? It totally works. Why not Motown?

The band I play with(Cody Bryant)usually does an extended bluegrass set which, besides a bunch of hard-core 'grass, includes Johnny B.Goode(w/the breaks and solos on Banjo),Old Time Rock & Roll and would you believe,a hysterical bluegrass version of the gay disco anthem "YMCA" by the Village People...... -MJ-

The "Into the Twangy First Century" went for $37.00. I dropped out at $35.
Cheers

Just a note to add. I just heard a bluegrass group from up here on the public radio station the other day doing selections from their new album. It is a complete blugrass version of Pink Floyds The Wall.

Craig,
That's a different band, as you are probably aware. I'd hesitate to call them bluegrass. Even tho they used banjo etc. on the CD, they travel w/2 gtr, bass, drums, and pedal steel.
