Jean Shepard is ALWAYS a class act. Teresa got a great close up of Dave Robbins on his LeGrande III. Mark Chestnut is good. Just plain good and his steel player was us in the mix and sounded and played great. It appeared he was playing an Excel and it had great tone. Katie Cook still sucks sh!t through a soda straw but what else is new? Kellie Coffey was GREAT! She sang country and sang it with feeling and Thomas added his magical touch to it with his new Carter. I never have been a Kenny Rogers fan because he is not a fan of steel guitar and that's all I got to say about that! THE FINALE was Larry, Steve & Rudy Gatlin with Tommy White. I haven't had singing put goose bumps on me in a long time but their's did. Larry Gatlin sounds as good as he ever did and Tommy White cut through like a hot knife in butter capturing that Emmons intro and turn around on Houston. They should have given them at least 45 minutes to perform. They were great!!!! This was the most exciting Opry in a long time and Tommy White helped make it so tonight. Also, Teresa got some great shots of Tommy, Dave Robbins and chestnut's player whom I don't know his name. I'm going to watch the re-run at 10. It's THAT good. I'm posting early because the adrenaline is still flowing. What a night! NOT A BAD PERFORMANCE ANYWHERE except Katie Cook.

......Top that, Theresa! Image

From looking at the archives I'm guessing that was Slim Yamaguchi with Chesnutt.
Loads of steel tonight but I will agree the highlight was Tommy's intro and C6 performence on Houston.
Hard to believe Kenny Rogers never played the opry before.

Mike,
My brother Brian Franklin was playing some awesome lead guitar work with Kenny Rogers last night. It's true it was Kenny's first time, amazing!

It was indeed a very good show.

I have also never been a Kenny Rogers fan, but my wife is. He used to come to the Bay Area every year (usually around Valentine's day) and my wife would MAKE me take her. I usually just watched his band, which was always incredible. Funny thing though, his show was ALWAYS the same year to year. With the exception of maybe a new song, his dialog with the audience was the same as the year before. It was to the point that I could actually talk out most of the dialog along with him. Seems as though he still has the gift of gab.

Kelly is very good.

Always have liked Mark Chestnut.

I didn't even mind Katie "KOOK" last night because the show was that good.Mark chestnut ,what can I say the man can flat out sing even with a broken guitar string. And Tommy White has to be one of the best compliments to an artist that the Opry has. I become a bigger fan each week if thats possible. He nailed Houston and the Gatlins sure need to comeback.Jeannie was pure jeannie and there were some real good shots of Dave and his smoothness. More shows like this.Kenny didn't have a steel but he did steal the audience......Mike your right on tonight I totally agree no matter what retcop says.

Ironically the song that Kenny Rogers sang,"Buy Me A Rose", originally had a really pretty up front steel part on his commercial released version. Of course since Kenny "loves" country music so much he didn't include Tommy White or any of the other outstanding available players to play it. Instead we were treated to a metallic sounding keyboard.Me thinks Kenny still uses country as an obligatory path to Pop music success. It is too bad he couldn't dig up a steel player to help him out; it might have covered up his hoarse sounding voice...Pete
[This message was edited by Peter Dollard on 09 June 2002 at 10:18 PM.]

Me thinks Kenny has made a great living singing abit hoarse. He's always sounded the same regardless with or without steel.
He's working a bunch and not worried about which radio station plays his music. His music career speaks for itself!
I'm glad he was finally ask to do the Opry!Theresa

For those of you who want to hear what Kenny sounds like with a steel, try to obtain a copy of the "First Edition" album entitled,"Calico." This album was a compilation of songs written by Michael Martin Murphy, about the demise of a silver mining town, and it featured Doyle Grisham on steel. The project was very picuresque, and Doyle's work added a haunting touch to the great story that was presented via the lyric.

If Brian was playing guitar with Kenny, what happened to Randy Dorman, who has played guitar for him for over 20 years? It wouldn't be another case of the artist looking out for the poor sideman...would it?? Image

Rick Harper resigned for health reasons. When word spread Brian tried out and got the job.

Earl,
Rick Harper played with Kenny atleast 20 years. His choice to leave, not Kenny's.
Another note, Rick played with the great Mike Smith with a group called "Pepper Tree"! WOW! They sounded great with original and top 40 songs back when I was young! Theresa, you still haven't answered my question. I have a CD by guitar player Randy Dorman. The liner notes say he has been with Kenny since 1977. He lives in Mt. Juliet and the last time I heard he was still with Kenny.I just want to find out what happenend to Randy. Image

Earl,

Brian just returned my call, and confirmed that Randy is still with Kenny Rogers. Many artists today, especially ones who don't have a steelplayer, carry 2 electrics. So it would appear that, atleast in Kenny's case, there is a certain amount of loyalty toward musicians.

Hmmm... missed the opry, but did get to meet Brian when he played with Mark Collie. I reckon that was about ten years ago in Killeen, Tx.

BTW, Theresa.... I used to have a small company named "Ryan Steel Guitar Products".
We made pick pouches, leg pouches, guitar covers, etc. I talked with your mom once about selling them with Franklin steels. This was right after I had met Brian. I told her she had some good kids.... She invited me and my wife over to dinner, but we never made it..... our loss Image

FWiW- I really liked this opry show. Larry Gatlin really put out, and Tommy White was just great!

I've always liked Jean Shepard, she is always good. My friend Jimmy Yates , now retired, used to play steel for her on the opry.

This was one of the better opry shows, and Theresa did a good job with those steel shots...............al Image Image
