I found these comments by the great Steeler Kayton Roberts very interesting.
"there’s too many people playing that sound too much alike. "
"there’s some great steel players but to me, they have a tendency to sound a whole lot alike. Used to be you could listen to a particular artist and in just like a minute you’d know who it was.."
