Question about a Haggard song

Post by Jason Powers »

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of Merle's song "Shelley's Winter Love"? A friend of mine and myself have been looking for it for 6 or 8 months now, and we can't find it anywhere. In my opinion, it is one of his best songs that you don't ever hear and can never seem to find. Many thanks to anyone on the Forum who can help. Jason

I'm only familiar with Don Walsner version. Come to think of it , I don't think I've ever heard it by Merle.

Chris: It should be in the Box Set "Untamed Hawk" which you can find by accessing the CDNow. com website.

Gary, I've seen that box set. Yes, it has all his early stuff, but nowhere near "all" his stuff.

It was originally on the album titled "Hag"; guessing around 1971 or 1972. I'll have to check the liner when I get home. I have it on vinyl but have never seen it on tape or CD.

That's probably my favorite Hag tune that was never released as a single. Another #1 for sure.

PS: I don't believe that tune is on the "Down Every Road" box set; must be Untamed Hawk, which I don't have. Image

Here's another question. How on earth can I get a hold of the albums that the Strangers made without Hag? I think they made at least a couple, I have NEVER seen either.

Chris;
There were 5 Strangers albums:
1) Instrumental Sounds Of Merle Haggard's Strangers (Capitol Records # ST-169 released in 1969)
2) Introducing My Friends The Strangers (Capitol Records # ST-445 released in 1970)
3) Getting To Know The Strangers (Capitol Records # ST-590 released in 1970)
4) Strangers And Friends, Honky Tonkin' (Capitol Records # ST-796 released in 1971)
5) Totally Instrumental With One Exception (Capitol Records # ST-11141 released in 1973)

As to where to find copies: Check with used and rare record stores. You might come across one. They are out there, finding them can be tough.

Good luck!

Those albums are getting increasingly harder to find, especially the first one from 1969.
E-bay never has them anymore, but I imagine other sites would have copies, Buckaroo Records online isn't too bad a resource.

Phooey!! I'm having no luck at all. A forum member was kind enough to e-mail me last week and say he'd make me a copy of the Strangers albums, but now he's disappeared off the face of the earth. If anyone else has these albums and could make copies, I've got out of print stuff that maybe we could trade. I'm gonna go pout in the corner now.
