Overlooked An Orchid

Post by Gary Harris »

A friend of mine and I can not agree on who played steel on the great George Morgan hit "I Overlooked An Orchid".
My friend and I played in a country music band in Wiesbaden, Germany in the early fifties and this was one of the tunes we played. WSM radio Nashville plays the very oldies on Saturday morning. Although we live about twenty-five miles apart we were both listening to this station this morning and heard this song.

Sure thought Carl Smith had the bit hit on this.

It was, indeed,Carl Smith and,it was, indeed,Billy Robinson. Johnny Seibert joined Carl shortly after. It was recorded in '49 or '50.

If they are playing a George Morgan version, I wonder if it's from an Album??

But, Carl Smith is the one that had the hit on it.

A friend and I were talking about Johnny Seibert and Carl Smith just yesterday. We both commented on how good Johnny played A6th with Carl on Mister Moon and I Overlooked An Orchid. Guess it's back to the drawings boards for us....... Image Image Image

We played the Carl Smith version a "jillion" times at the Wagonwheel in Waynesville, Missouri in 1950....our most requested song!(My non-pedal Fender triple did a pretty good job of duplicating the steel work on those Carl Smith records.)
[This message was edited by Gene Jones on 25 November 2001 at 08:52 PM.]

Another senior moment, it was Carl Smith we were listening to, not Geo Morgan. Great record, I still love it.
