Stan Rogers

Post by Steve Frost »

Chip Fossa's thread the other day about the anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald brought to mind the late great Canadian songwriter/folksinger, Stan Rogers. He wrote some incredible songs about the Inland Fisheries and the maritime, such as White Squall, the MaryEllen Carter and Lockkeeper, among others. Anybody got any memories, observations or comments about this remarkable talent?-Steve

I never knew Stan. His brother Garnett is an excellent picker, singer/songwritter.

He lives around here (Hamilton, Ont). We often cross paths. His Volvo is always loaded with instruments and CDs. He's quite a road-warrior. Info at http://www.garnetrogers.com/

Yeah, Steve. Stan's work is timeless. I first heard "Barret's Privateers" & "white Squall" at a formative age. My young children too were completely enthralled by the power of Stan's music when they heard White Squall for the first time last year.

I knew Stan back in the Seventies when I was more into the folk scene. He was a headstrong character, last time I ran into him was at a jazz bar in Edmonton when we were both off work. He died a year or two later.
