Presidential announcement

Post by Bob Hoffnar »

I saw this news item in "theonion.com" and thought it was important to pass on:

President Urges Calm, Restraint Among Nation's Ballad Singers

WASHINGTON, DC— In the wake of the recent national tragedy, President Bush is urging Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, and other singers to resist the urge to record mawkish, insipid all-star tribute ballads. "To America's recording artists, I just want to say, please, there has already been enough suffering," Bush said. "The last thing we need right now is a soaring Barbra Streisand-Brian McKnight duet titled 'One For All.'" Reports that the FBI had confiscated several notebooks and audio tapes from Diane Warren's home could not be confirmed as of press time.

Don't take this post too seriously either. Be patient, I will try to address all issues.

Well, let's see...mawkish insipid lyrics:

"When the horse-ship left Vanilla, sailin' loudly o'er the sea, deep blue sea, many sailors' hearts was filled with fondly threats"

I believe the title was "Porta Reeko Baby". At least that's how I learned it off the 78 up there where I was raised. Talk about mawkish, not to mention insipid. But nevertheless inspired by a national event. Someone later told me that Michael Jackson wrote the lyrics. He ripped off the melody from an old Mariah Carey flip-side. Then Cowboy Cowpath latched onto it and the rest is history. Which brings us to the next question: Who was the steeler?

Hey, for the past 25 or 30 years "popular music" as well as country music and blues could have probably benefited from a little restraint and decency in some of the lyrical content. Not talking about freedom of speech issues here, just that sometimes we need to watch what we say and how we say it for the sake of those who are listening.

On a related note of empathy, I reckon that I can agree with the President that prolonged listening to much of today's popular music could be termed "suffering". Should the FBI decide to confiscate my notebooks they will mainly find number charts with an occasional harmony vocal line written in. The audio tapes I have are of such poor sound quality that they probably won't be interested anyway.

Yeah, I like Dale Watson's music too! Good taste, hey I got it.

Do you think I know what I'm talking about? Me neither.

THAT DOES IT! I'm protesting...
sssh...keep this on the Q.T., I just tore all my mattress tags off!
Tomorrow, I may "go postal", & swipe a ball-point pen from the Post Office!
BTW, there WAS a cool knockoff tune out several years ago, "We Arm The World".
To paraphrase the late Jim Morrison, I'll betcha Weird Al Yankovic's mind is "squirmin' like a toad", 'long about now.

This is tending towards the OTB discussions that a select few of us used to somewhat monopolize. Image

Hey! He is from Texas ya know. I'd be shocked if there aren't some Johnny Bush recordings onboard AF1.

Bob H neglected to mention (I'm sure he knows) that TheOnion web site is a satirical site.

One of their more recent attempts is HiJackers Surprised to find Selves in Hell

Judge for yourself how good it is
