Internet Radio...do You Listen?

Post by Geoff Brown »

We've all read the posts about the current state of commercial radio. It seems to many that the flavor of radio these days is much like a fast-food burger...pretty much the same wherever you go. How many of us here have taken the time to explore the vast variety of music that is available via our computers and the internet? I'm not talking about Napster or other file-sharing programs, so let's leave that topic out of this, please. What I'm refering to are "radio stations" that broadcast...usually 24/7 online. Indie labels for all types of music are using the internet as an affordable means to broadcast music that never sees the light of day on the airwaves. Do you have a favorite site that you visit when you need a good music fix? What do you listen to? Who do you like, or not like? What music have you heard online, that you may not have heard otherwise? Discuss. Image

www.countrybear.com is also good. They have lots of "classic" country and also a lot of newer music, much of which is as country as any of the older stuff ever thought about being.

They've also got a link on the main page to another area of their site plays nothing but old country music. All in all, so far it's my favorite "radio" site.

Buck Owen's radio staion, KUZZ in Bakersfield broadcasts Buck's live show in stereo from the Crystal Palace every Fri. and Sat. at 8pm PST. All you need is RealPlayer, and you can d.load it via a link at the KUZZ website: http://www.kuzz.com/ The Palace is a great place to see a show if you're ever in town. Buck does it up right Image

The station is having problems with it's streaming audio(it's disabled right now)...something to do with advertising money, policies and whatever. So you can't listen to the realtime broadcast for the time being. I don't know if that affects the live show broadcast or not. I emailed them to ask about it just now. Hopefully it will be on. I'm gonna check it out later and see.

Oklahoma City has a great C&W station: KKNG "King Country" - Plays little or no crap, and has "Jukebox Saturday Night" that features OLD classics. Great Sunday morning Southern Gospel show as well.

Go to My Websiteand find KKNG Classic Country on my "Links" page. Look for their "Listen Live" link on their page.

The Buck Owens show on KUZZ was broadcast last nite, and was a nice show. Buck's been sick for a couple weeks, but he was in good form last nite. Did the usual chestnuts, did two or three nice George Jones covers, some Hag tunes, and paid tribute to Chet Atkins, Roy Nichols and Johnny Russell. Other band members took their turn in the spotlight as well. I didn't get to hear the entire show, but it went at least two hours. If anyone happened to tune it in...who was playing steel? I didn't catch the guy's name. Some nice licks goin on there. Audio quality was excellent.

Here on Vancouver Island we get something that the soul yearns for.
Don`t know if anybody else gets it or what the "ins and outs" are stateside but we get galaxy "Classic Country" - a satelite station (909) which is 24hrs non-stop. It`s full of stuff you`d almost forgotten.

Thanks Bill. And as I have already told you, your show at live365.com is fantastic Image
How hard was it for you to get the ball rolling to set that up, anyway?

Bob, I've heard that there are some good programs on the dish, but I know little about them. A friend of mine has a pricey cable package at his house, and he has some 24/7 audio broadcasts for different types of music. He's pretty happy with it.

Geoff,
I guess I can`t complain as re. the price of the satelite station, as I think we have chance at about 200 or so (who konows?) but we have it split right down the middle price-wise as we have my M.I.L. set up on the property with her system - it`s costing us each $12.50 per billing and that`s with our Canadian Peso!! All the very best.

Don't forget to tune in the Grand Ole Opry on www.WSMOnline.com Friday nights and Saturday nights. For those of you who love your country music pure and are usually unhappy with the t.v. version, tune in the second show at around 10.30 pm Eastern time on Saturday nights. They usually feature all of the verterans that got the Opry started in the first place. It's great music to be able to practice your playing with.
[This message was edited by Neil Flanz on 14 July 2001 at 08:21 PM.]

I posted this on a different thread about the Hag. Seems appropriate here as well.
The House Of Blues website has a lot of concerts archived. There's a great Hag show from this year that I watched recently, and well worth checking out, especially if you have a broadband connection. www.hob.com
The "Country Gems" radio program isn't bad either.

I listen to 3 stations, WSM online, Live365 Emmons 84(Great stuff, Bill, and KBON in Eunice LA, all Cajun, old country and "swamp pop". I bought a little FM transmitter to hook into my speaker jack so I can hear from any stereo in the house, without running wires all over the place.

Hiya Keith,

I listen to those stations too, and like 'em all. The other stations that folks have posted here are great as well. I've seen those FM transmitter deals, and was curious about them. Does it work pretty well?
I still listen to radio via the airwaves, but only long enough to realize that I don't want to listen to it Image
[This message was edited by Geoff Brown on 23 July 2001 at 01:23 PM.]

I listen to Mike Gross who does a weekly show over the net. Mike is a big fan and lover of the steel guitar. he has done so much for the steel guitar and the players.

He is most dedicatd to western swing and has more knowledge and backround on musicians and their recordings,,,,he is one of the best
I have ever heard,,,he does the steel guitar
and players past and present "proud"

Give him a listen Friday nights 9pm till midnite eastern time,,,,,www.swinginwest.com
Give him a listen,,,he's the best in my opinion.....Jody Hey DVA,,,,he's played the Hot Club since 1987 and has helped get it out of the "mothballs"

I tried to tune in KUZZ this morning but they have shut down their live broadcast for the time being, some problem about commercials on the internet. Hope they get it sorted out soon, would love to hear Buck live, even though it'll come on at midnite Atlantic time.

Hiya Keith..The live show on Fri. and Sat. nites from the Palace is still on...at least it was last weekend. And at that time the live radio portion of the site had been shut down. So I'm assuming that the gig from the palace is a separate thing that's not affected by the other. Hope so anyway. On at midnite in Nova Scotia? Man, you need to move inland a little...maybe to Saskatoon? Image

Saskatoon is a looooong way inland, oh well it's probably worth staying up for.
RE the FM transmitter, it works pretty well, although it does drift a bit on one of my stereos. I may take it back to Radio Shack and try another one. The frequency range is 95-105 MHz plus or minus 2 percent I think it says, the print's pretty small. They sell for around $40 Canadian. I saw one on the internet once for around $100 U.S. but didn't go for it. If they made one that could be tuned more precisely it would be better, but it's not too bad for the money. It;'s a nice break from country radio.
