Harrison Says He Expects to Die Soon

Sunday, July 22, 2001

LONDON — Former Beatle George Harrison is quoted as saying he expects cancer will soon claim his life.

A British newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, says Harrison made the confession to Sir George Martin — a close friend who used to produce the group's records.

The paper quotes Martin as saying the ex-Beatle "knows that he is going to die soon" and adds that Harrison accepts that.
Harrison is 58 and was treated last month in Switzerland for a cancerous brain tumor. It's his third battle with the disease.

In 1998, Harrison was treated for throat cancer, which he blamed on smoking. Four months ago, he underwent lung cancer surgery.

Yes, very sad. My own father was a heavy
smoker and eventually contracted lung cancer;
which did matastasize to his brain.

Cancer is an ugly way to go, both for the person who has it, and the ones who have to bear witness.

George is rather spiritual and may be drawing on his experiences with the Majarishi, while the Beatles spent time in India. The general
Eastern philosophy on life and death is quite different from the West, and maybe this is helping George cope.

Anyway, he is still with us, so let's hope
maybe it will turn itself around. These
"miracles" do happen once in a while.

Very sad, indeed. Lately, it seems like we can't go for a week without hearing of someone's sad misfortune Image

I've been hearing this story from other sources for a while now and I understand he may go rather soon.

Charles Osgood reported it this morning on CBS Sunday Morning. I've been thinking of George off and on all day. Peace be with you, George.

Forumites and Beatle Fans:
George Martin's agent has denied that George Martin ever gave an interview to the Mail, and George Harrison claims to feel fine after undergoing radio treatment in the Swiss Alps. That was the story I read as late as this morning.

I could handle a lot more "radio treatment" of George Harrison. I don't hear his music often enough. I've always been a fan.
