Honky Tonk Man on TNN

Post by Sam Marshall »

TNN showed the Clint Eastwood movie "Honky Tonk Man" yesterday. This is the first time I ever saw it. It featured a scene where Clint's character, a songwriter/singer dying of TB, visits Bob Wills in a recording studio (maybe a radio station). Bob Wills is played by Johnny Gimble. Bob's singer is played by Ray Price. Tommy Allsup is also there.

Later on, Marty Robbins is in the movie. It was apparently right before his death.

Clint Eastwood has always shown his love of country music in his movies.
If you read the Bob Wills bio's you will also come upon the name Derwood Amrstringer
who played with Bob in the Light Crust Doughboys.
You are right about Marty Robbins that the movie was released shortly after his death in
Dec 1982

I thought I saw Jeff Newman as one of the musicians during the Grand Ol' Opry audition.

I once saw a jazz concert TV special that was produced by Clint Eastwood and orchestrated by Lennie Niehaus (he played sax on the Charlie Parker movie that Clint also produced). They did a Bob Wills number during the television special.

I understand that one of Clint's earliest ambitions was to play piano with Bob Wills.

You're not going to believe this, but I had been to the theater and watched "O Brother Where Art Thou" just prior to tuning into "Honky Tonk Man." I also like "Tender Mercies" with Robert Duvall.

Sam...

I'm with you on "Tender Mercies". Another movie I saw 5 times in the theater when it was out was "Five Easy Pieces". It's the only movie I ever saw again and again in a theater. It starred Jack Nicholson and it was a very different look at a musically talented family.

That was my "buddy" Buddie Hrabal playing his at the time new D-10 Dekley in Betty Buckley's band in "Tender Mercies". Image Those concert scenes were filmed at the Grapevine Opry in Grapevine, Texas.

While watching the filming I met Chisai Childs who was running the Opry at the time and I got the job as steel player there! Image

Uh, Janice, excuse me but those names are Durwood Brown (Milton Brown's brother) and Herman Arnspiger, Bob Wills' first guitarist. Come on now, I know you have read the book and probably have the Bob Wills Story tape series as well. The name "Derwood Armstringer" is a clever composite of those names but it ain't authentic (kinda like a "West and Coltsmith" revolver or a "Kawasuzuyaha" motorcycle) although I'll have to admit that it is close enough to sound pretty good.

I still like ya Janice. Well, I gotta go. Time for me to head down to Rears, Sawbuck and Co. (or maybe the J. P. Nickel store) for some new boots, as I appear to be wearing out some shoe leather that ain't my own.

A Bob Wills fan forever,
Tim R.

Sam, I'm a big fan of the Coen brothers, the producer/writer/director team who made 'O Brother' and a heap of other films I love.

I really enjoyed Honky Tonk Man when it came out and saw it at the drive-inn.
I might keep an eye out for Tender Mercies. Thanks for the tip.
