Another "who was it?" question

Post by nick allen »

My wife has an old cassette taped from the radio, sometime in the late 70s, and she wants to know who's singing one particular song on it. "Ask those guys on the Steel Guitar Forum," she said. "Those guys know everything, and one of them probably played on it!"
The first verse is:
Drunk and cold, can’t get no help from nobody,
I’d sell my soul to find one more drink left in that bottle
They say I’m worthless and all hope for me is gone
Heaven help me, I’m trying to beat the morning home.

Anyone have any idea who the singer is? our best guess is TG Shepherd, or maybe Larry Gatlin... (There’s an unobtrusive, but very nice, steel part, as well).
Thanks in advance

I would say it's T.G. Shepard. The song is titled "Trying To Beat The Morning Home".

The album credits list Lloyd Green and Charlie Owen. It doesn't sound like Lloyd.
Pete was on Devil in the Bottle.

Get his "Greatest Hits" tape if you have the chance. He had another hit (quite similar) called "Devil In A Bottle". T.G., as well as Gary Stewart, seemed to specialize in good ol' drinkin' songs! I wish they did this kinda stuff today. Image
