Sir John Hughey has a song on his Neck To Neck CD, called Afraid. I would like to know who recorded the vocal version, if there is one. It's a beautiful melody. John plays a pretty chord in the song, that I haven't found yet. I'm sure it's on my guitar' but I can't find it. Happy New Year everybody, Jim

I don't have that CD! Though there's a lot of different songs with that title, it's probably the old Fred Rose tune that was done by Eddy Arnold, Bill Haley, and later by Willie Nelson.

There is an old song for the 40's, I think the title is Afraid of Losing You. (not the Charlie Pride I so afraid of losing you again). I haven't heard Hughey's album so I'm guessing on which one it is.

If my memory is correct, I recall that George
Morgan recorded this tune in the late 1940s.
I think it came out about the same time as
CRY BABY HEART.

Rex Allen recorded the original version of it that was played on all the country stations. Jerry Byrd was the steel player on the recording. I have the recording and love Jerry's turn around. The recording came out in 1948 or 49. NOt sure just which year.

I don't recall Eddy Arnold or George Morgan recording it, but they may have. I thought I had heard everything that Eddy ever recorded with a steel player and dont recall it. But he may have indeed.

Rex Allen did a beautiful rendition of it. Rex had a deep baritone voice that was like NO other. His voice renditions were awesome on "Afraid". As was the case on all the recordings he made. He loved the way JB played and Jerry did in fact play on most of Rex's recordings. One very nice one was "Bandera Waltz" and again, Jerry did a beautiful turn around on it.

Course that was in the days when the steel player kicked off the song, played the break and ended it. Dem days be long gone folks.

God rest Rex Allen's soul,

carl

I was on The Record Lady site yesterday and heard Jerry on the Ferlin Husky recording of The Waltz You Saved For Me. I always did like that record, or anything Jerry played on. Another good one was an Ernie Ashworth record, I think the title was " You Can't Pick A Rose In December", or something like that. Thanks everybody for your help. Jim

Jim,

Speaking of Ferlin Huskey, he made a recording called "Next to Jimmy" that featured Jerry Byrd playing steel.

Many of us feel this was Jerry's greatest turn around he ever did. Jerry was awesome on everything he played, but this one will send chills down your spine. It is short but incredibly beautiful. If you can beg, borrow or steal (lol) it, get it. You will see what I mean.

It is sad indeed, that this was about the last recording Jerry cut before he disgustingly moved to Hawaii. It was at this time, that pedals had sooo entrenched itself in the "country" field that a lap steel, even in the hands of the greatest of all, was no longer wanted by the producers.

Sad indeed.

God bless Jerry Byrd,

carl
