Tabs (or advice) for "Crazy" and "Route 66"

Post by Charles Fager »

I am a PSG beginner and am looking for some basic tabs (or any advice) for playing "Crazy" and "Route 66". How would I go about getting some simple playing ideas for these songs? Also, I was told to play Route 66 with C6 tuning, but I only have a E9 guitar. How do I navigate this? Could someone explain the basic idea behind C6 tuning situations as compared to E9?......CF

I have tab for CRAZY (the meleody) on my site: here. As far as playing backup, there are a lot of different ways to do that and it's not easy to explain on a forum. You need to know the chord positions, majors and minors in several different positions using the various pedals and levers, up and down the fretboard. Also Harmonized Scales and how to use them to create fills, riffs, intros, solos, etc. This is true regardless of what tuning you are playing.

In general C6 tuning is better for swing, jazz, and Hawaiian. E9 it better for country twang. Swing sounds ARE available on E9 however, and whoever told you to play C6 on Route 66 is really looking for Swing riffs. There are some awesome swing sounds on E9 using 9th chords, 6th chords, diminished chords, augmented chords, etc... it's all there, but without the low voicings of the C6 tuning. You might want to take a couple of personal lessons from a good player in your area. Best of luck with it.

Here's my version of 'Crazy', on E 9.

It's very basic, because I can only play basic Image

I'll post the tab shortly.

It says 'Bandwidth Exceeded', so I don't know if or when it will be available.

Route 66 is just another blues, in spite of the jazzy feel.

It's a jazz blues. Way more II-Vs than a regular blues. Some VIs even!

Richard (and everybody)

I think posting basic tab is a great idea for those of us who need years of work to rise to the level of basic. To me, it seems there isn't enough simpler stuff.

OK, I've fixed the music link http://www.freefilehosting.net/file/?id=pdj2kaTe

The tab will take up quite a bit of space, as my limited computer skills mean I am unable to post tab in conventional form

Thanks to both, and I'll confess that when I got ahold of Doug's tab on his site, I began to focus more on the "F" lever on some of my hunting expeditions as an ear player. There is the joy of finding a lick, myself, but the way Doug does his tab makes me wish I had gone down a different road many years ago.
