Streaming vs. mp3
Is there a reason Real Audio streaming is used instead of mp3 files. It seems with all the fees and updates makes streaming less desirable.
mp3 sounds great on Windows applications.
I know Buddy has gone to mp3. Isn't this the new standard for posting music files.
It would be nice to convert all the REBEL files to mp3. Thoughts and opinions please.

The biggest reason for using Real Audio is file size. A Real Audio file is far smaller. On the same note, MP3's are a whole lot smaller than wav files. (That's the reason I switched the site clips from wav to MP3.)

People who don't have broadband internet service are often operating at 26kbps or less (that's SLOW). When it takes 15 minutes or more to download a 30 second mp3 file, it's easy to understand why the webmaster may choose to stream rather than download. RealAudio allows optimization for the various connection speeds and, like Ernie says, the files are smaller, so it streams easily and downloads quicker (but doesn't sound as good). Disk storage may also be an issue. MP3s can be several times the size of RealAudio (depending on how much compression is used for both types)

Steel:
Allow me to chime in on this , being as how it is my website. I had thought of going to mp3 and had in fact started changing some of the files over from real audio to mp3. What caused me to pause and rethink the issue was: SERVER SPACE! The real audio files on the site now take up over 65 megs of space on the ISP's server. That costs me $2.50 for every 5 megs I use and as I am on High Speed with another company, I don't use this company to access the internet. Whenever I do up a bunch of my records, I call them up and tell them to add some more space to me and it shows up on the next bill.
What with everything else in life, I go with what I can afford.
Thanks for your interest.
