Tab Suggestion

Post by Dave Birkett »

I believe that tablature should be able to be sight read. The two best solutions I’ve seen are TabEdit and Buddy Emmons’ system of dots. I have another suggestion: Put an additional line at the bottom of the tab that has a percussion part; i.e., notes and rests that don't convey pitch. I don’t have the fonts to do it and I don’t think the Forum’s software would support them if I did. Any thoughts?

How about TablEdit, in which standard musical notation is shown alongside the tablature?

I mentioned TablEdit, but I think you'd need a website to host an image in order to use it in a post. I just got an email from Roy Thompson who showed me exactly the form I was thinking of. But it looks like a program in itself. I was thinking of a way to use notepad so we could post the tabs.

I used Windows Paint to produce that
tab Dave. It's very simple when you
get the hang of it and then it is
easy to convert to different file formats.

Hi Dave
Will this work for you? <font face="monospace" size="2"><pre>
A A7
1______________________________________ _________________

2______________________________________ _________________

3______________________________________ _________________

4______________________________________ _________________

5______________________________________ _________________

6______7(#-6---5---5(b_________________ _________________

7______________________________________ _________________

8______________________________________ _________________

9______7---6---5---5___________________ _________________
10_____________________________________ _________________
BEAT ▐...|...▐...|...▐...|...▐...|... ▐...|...▐...|...
one and two and three etc.
</pre></font>
All you need to do, is to hold the ALT key and type 222 to get the bold upright symbol.
And use the full stop for the dots, and the key underneath the Backspace key for the thin upright line. Copy and paste as required. And use a space in all the lines to separate the bars.

Hope this helps.

Peter, thanks. Yes, that works. It's right in line with BE's method. It isn't perfect, but it's the best we can do with Notepad and the Forum's software. I tried importing some music fonts, but Notepad will only support one tab at a time. So when I inserted a musical note, even the text (the fret numbers, etc.) changed to musical notation.
