A Nice Change from BE

Post by Paul Graupp »

Getting to swap posts with Buddy Emmons in the Events Forum/Johnny Bush topic was a very nice experience but while I was in there, someone gave a link to his Q&A site and I found this run in one of his answers.
It's a nice change so I though I'd tab it in case someone else doesn't have it either. I used it this weekend in Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me and it fits like a glove.

[tab]
chord----Ab---Ab+---Fm-----Ab+---Ab---Bb7--

5--------4----4A/2--4A-----4A/2--4----4V---
6--------4----4-----4------4-----4----4----
7------------------------------------------
8--------4----4-----4------4-----4----4----
[tab]

Key of Eb; E9th tuning and Vertical lowers the B notes on strings 10 and 5, a hald step.
The notes on strings 6 and 8 could be sustained or picked. I hope someone enjoys it as much as I did and it's been there all this time.....

Regards. Paul

Edited for theory malfunction: Changed Key from E to E flat. I'm learning......

Paul;
Wouldn't that be fret 5? You can throw in the 6th string lower with the vertical (and then resolve it with the 6th string lower and the E to Eb lever.)

Ernie: You are so right !! I was thinking of the IV chord and called it frett four instead. I'll go back and change it. I think I'll key it in Eb and save all the changing in the tab. Thanks for pointing that out and I like the Q & A site. I'm going to try your suggestion as well.

This might be really old stuff but this basic sound also sounds good with strings 3 and 5. The sound comes close to the sound that used Brumley on "Together Again".

Leroy: Yes that would give the proper changes for the Brumley Signature sound but as I wrote in Fretts/Fender 1965 Vol 2, in an interview with Tom, he didn't do it that way back then. He backed up one fret while depressing the pedal raising the third string only, on strings 3 and 5 the same as you described but with that slight difference. I would think that with the guitars now available, he would probably do it your way nowadays and while I have always done it the original way for that song and a lot of others as well, I am going to change this weekend and try it as you do it.

The "Together Again" lick sounds better to me the way Tom originally did it. I use that lick a lot as described above, but when playing "Together Again" I do it like Tom with a half pedal on P1 and drop back a fret to simulate the lower. Image
