I used the Bigsby on Red Foley’s Walking in the Cold Cold, Rain. We did that before Slowly.
I pulled a session with Web Pierce and he wanted a different sound. I had two pedals on that guitar with an E9th tuning. It was an E on top, not the Ab on top they use today. Pierce had no idea what he wanted. [Guitarist] Grady Martin said, “Listen to Budd do this intro.” I done that for Webb and he said, okay, “We’ll do it that way.” We didn’t do sessions like you do ‘em today. We just got the whole band together with one or two microphones and that was it.
It was just another job to me. I never dreamed it would do what it did. It was the fastest tune to hit number one; took five days. I got pretty busy after a while. I got a lot of mail from that one from people wanting’ to know how it was done but they didn’t dream it was foot pedals. They thought I was using a bar with camshafts. Alvino Rey played pedals long before I did but he didn’t play them the same way. He changed whole chords with his.

Thanks for posting, Andy. Personally I find the Red Foley song more interesting. I guess Slowly was catchier, but the intro to Walking hits you straight away as "modern" steel playing.
