Nut for 8 string pan style peg head

Post by John Gately »

Lap steel build: What are my options for a nut for a Kluson 8 string pan-style peghead?
Thanks in advance for any helpful information.

I made this using a milling machine, but if it just a lap steel, I think you could do it with a hacksaw, files, vice and a hand drill. There is a flat on the bottom, but it is just 3/8 aluminum with a couple countersunk holes on the side. Needle files for the string grooves will work if you don't have nut files. Smooth the bottoms of the string grooves with this. https://www.homedepot.com/pep/RIDGID-Ti ... XkQAvD_BwE

That's a nice bit of work, and very similar to what I have in mind. Did you machine the grooves in the rollers to different depths so that the top of the strings all end up level on the same plane?

They are the the brass end of a guitar string. I tried to make gauged rollers and my machinery (and skills!)is not really up to the task. There is a video from Sierra that explains how it is done, but personally I don't think it makes that much difference. My guitar plays well. That said If I move to a 10 string with larger bass strings, this approach wouldn't work.
